I know many of you have gone through this and I have been dreading this day (or days to be exact!)

Well the day has finally arrived: Both my boys are teething and have teeth cutting their gums! (Noah has 2 teeth coming in and Jonah has 3!!!!)

WOW! I thought labor was hard (taht was a cake walk compared to this!)

Both are crying, moaning and just generally unhappy!

Jonah has a fever, Noah sounds like a caged lion starving (though neither want to eat)

I just want to complain for a minute.... I've been up since 6AM yesterday and have been trying along with DH to entertain, soothe and basically brib the little ones to happiness. We've been giving tylenol like it's going out of style (of course still following doctor guidelines) and oralgel like crazy too!

I know this too shall pass but boy is it taking it's sweet time (and it's only day 1)

    Thanks for the vent!

I hear ya ~ we're going through it right now too. DS has 3 poking through on top...that'll make 5 total :p DD has 2 poking through, that'll make 4 for her so far  Hmmm ~ not that they're competing or anything :D

Have you tried the Hylands Teething Tablets? We got them and they seem to really help them. We're not giving as much Tylenol

    April :)

Mine are teething too and it is driving me crazy. I have not had any breaks from the babies all week and it is wearing me down.

My girls love to chew on COLD carrots when they are teething badly -- (we just have gotten teeth in the last month) -- I take a regular carrot from the fridge, peel it, cut it in two usually and give one section to each baby. They can't get any carrot off until they have teeth, but it is big enough it gives them something to chomp on and cold to help soothe the gums. I love to give them those when we go for a walk too - then it doesn't matter if they throw it down!

Now that they have teeth, they'll get little pieces (almost like shredded) off, but I haven't had any problems with choking - I just don't give them to them in the house anymore otherwise I have little carrot pieces everywhere, but still a favorite for walks!

For teething you have to give motrin. Tylenol doesn't even come close to taking care of the pain. Mine have their 4 teeth and it wasn't BAD at all.. I was shocked. It went soo well that I never even saw the two bottom teeth were in since they were 4 mos old and had NO SIGNS of teething!! My mom found them. Duh! ANyway, they're cutting their top two right now and it's been a little more sore.. they even bruised!! Motrin around the clock, not tylenol.. You need the anti inflammatory properties of Motrin for teething pain. Giving Tylenol for teething would be like us taking Tylenol for cramps-- not gonna cut it. :)

Yep yep, ditto on ivfbound's response - infant's Motrin or a generic ibuprofen equivalent will work. We use Tylenol for everything else, but for teething it has to be Motrin!

Call your pedi before giving motrin as it isn't recommended for babies under 6 months old.

I use tylenol and it definitely helps my girls. Ana got all 4 top teeth within a couple days of each other while DH was out of town for a week and it was nutty. But between tylenol and LOTS AND LOTS of cool things to chew she did fine and once they cut thru the gum she was a happier kiddo. GL!!!

motrin is great but i think your kids are 5 months so i would call the doctor first. i used Hylands teething tablets they melt right in the mouth quickly put under their tongue. also what is good is humphreys but they don't dissolve as quickly and i put them in a little water just to melt them then give them to the babies. it is all natural and i don't have to give so much tylenol. but if one has fever then yes give tylenol. good luck i hope they are back to normal soon for you. also the hylands and humphreys are great with crankiness.

Ryan was a breeze getting his first tooth. Just a little fussy at eating and a little temp. Jake MUST be getting his first as he is whining constantly and NOTHING makes him happy. It was such a rough day yesterday, that when DH got home from work, Mommy had a beer! :80:

BTW: Be glad so many are coming at once!

Mine got their two teeth at 4 mos exactly and Ped and nurse and nurseline told me "Motrin AROUND THE CLOCK until the teeth are ALL THE WAY THROUGH."

Motrin is not going to hurt the baby at four months- I was told to give the recommended dosage for youngest age/weight.. You are to go by WEIGHT before age when it comes to dosage. The ONLY reason they say not to give under six months is in case baby is underweight or too small NOT because it is going to hurt a YOUNGER baby-- that just doesn't make sense.. And I asked the Ped and they said it's based on weight not some magic thing that happens after 6 mos of age that suddenly baby can have Motrin.

Do whatever you feel comfortable doing. Point is- teething pain is pretty much the worst pain a baby can go through-- if it was ME getting teeth-- I would like to have Motrin.. NOT Tylenol.. I remember when pg-- I was miserable using Tylenol-- pretty much a placebo drug if you ask me.. Fine for fevers etc.. Not soo much for pain of teething.

Teething tablets are a fabulous idea however, they last fifteen minutes.. Same with Orajel etc.. these are TOPICAL agents and are not pain blockers.

I am actually surprised at how NOT bad the teething process has been. I suppose compared to the colic- this is easy! Good luck!!

    poor babies and poor mama!

i'd also add anything cold and hard they can chew on; try freezing washcloths - i just used to dip the edge in water and wring it out and put a half dozen in a plastic cup; they would harden into a sort of long tip which the girls would chew/suck on.

And if you have those munchkin mesh feeders put in frozen peaches, pears or mango (bananas are good as well but more of a pain to clean!); plus they get a little sweetness from the fruit.

ditto on the carrots - mine also loved celery sticks and big pieces of apples; 8ths or 4ths....i used to worry about choking but they pretty much spit out whatever they bite off; however, i never leave them alone with carrots or apples.

Hang in there; this too shall pass.

Awww, poor babies. Teething is NO FUN! We use the teething tablets as well. I've been told (even by a pediatrician) that Orajel can actually toughen the gums, making it harder for the teeth to come through.

    You'll get through it. :hug99:

[I was just there !!!! Luckily, it only impacted my DS - DD did not phase. We found Motrin to work a lot better than Tylenol. We loved the Orajel in the Qtips - it was so much easier to use. Also, frozen wash cloths he loved. Good luck - it lasted for a week and then it got better - the odd think is he never got his teeth it must have just been the position they were in. thinking of you.
