So our girls decided that 35 weeks and 4 days was enough and decided to show up on July 10th! My water broke at 2 PM on the 9th and they were born (no C section--yay!) early Friday morning. Here's the short version of the story--

My water for Baby A broke at 2, we got to the hospital around 4 PM with contraction about 15 to 20 minutes apart and I was 80% effaced and 2 cm dilated. They started the Pitocin around 10 PM when I was a little over 4 cm. The contractions weren't that bad at that point but I decided to get the epidural because I didn't know how bad they would get very quickly. One thing no one had told me was that the epidural process was fairly painful. At that point the contractions weren't that bad so I wondered if it was worth it (later I was certain it was!) They made me eat dinner at 5 PM which was the only thing that gave me the strength to get through the 2nd delivery. The doctor said it was usually a centimeter an hour from then on out, so she estimated we would start pushing at 4 AM. The nurses all thought it would be sooner but it turns out the doctor was right.

By about 2 AM, I was 9 1/2 centimeters dilated but they kept telling me to wait until I was all the way there and her head was fully engaged (which took another 2 hours!) At 4, they took me into the operating room (which for those of you yet to go through it is quite an overwhelming experience). All the people, the lights, the equipment, etc.--I had a little panic!

Baby A (Elyse Walker) was born at 5:42 AM after almost an hour and 45 minutes of pushing and she was 5 lbs. 9.9 oz. She had a much more traumatic birth than her sister since she paved the way and is spending some time in the NICU for breathing issues (probably a combination of her being early, some fluid in her lungs and maybe a little infection) but her long-term prognosis is good. Baby B (Ava Jean) followed at 6:33 AM (yes, over 45 minutes later!) and she was 5 lbs. 5.4 oz. and is doing great! Ava will most likely go home with us tomorrow and Elyse will hopefully only have a short stay in the NICU.

They are amazing and we are excited and exhausted! Thanks to everyone for all of the support on this message board and I look forward to seeing you in the first year group!
