[SIZE=12pt]Tonight we are having a thunderstorm. I put the twins down to sleep at 8:30 and about 25 minutes ago both of them are screaming and trying to get out of their room. The thunder woke them up! I think this is their first realization of thunder/lightning and storms. I think it is interesting that they now have a realization of something other than themselves.

I told them the angels were bowling. Mommy and daddy go bowling and it is very noisy. (They can relate as they have come to watch us bowl many times). So I said the angels were having fun and they were being loud and bowling. Michael calmed right down but it didn't convince Mikayla as easily!

Too cute! What a precious time in their lives! :)

    That's a creative explanation!

We had a thunderstorm the other night too. I don't think it bothered them once they were in bed, but they were a little alarmed during the bedtime routine. We had a lot of thunderstorms last summer when Amy was just starting to talk, and we explained that weird noise as "lightning thunder boom!" So when they heard it again, we were able to just say "That's the lightning thunder boom!" and they accepted it.

Show them it. I took my oldest to the window and showed her the lightening and said how pretty it was. She loved it ever since.

My guys think it's the clouds bumping together.

Thunderstorms occur regularly here so we had to deal with it pretty young. We took a very matter-of-fact approach similar to Alden's explanation. We told them that it's a BOOM-BOOM-BOOM called thunder... it's loud but doesn't hurt and sometimes it has flashes of lightening so they should watch for the flashes when they hear the booms. That gives them something to anticipate. I hear them over the monitor during storms sometimes giggling and saying, "Cheese!" because lightening reminds them of the camera flash. No fear, though, and I hope it stays that way.

    so cute!

My mom's dad was a huge bowler, actually ran a bowling alley, and she always said he was in heaven bowling and when it's a BIG crack it was a strike. We used to try to figure out how well his game was going.

Too cute! I can't wait to tell my kids the same story.

Since we don't really do heaven or angels, and because they didn't know what bowling was that young, we just called it "drums in the sky."

The boys just recently experienced their first big storm since they were babies and we told them the clouds were bumping together and that the rain helped the trees and birds get a nice long drink etc etc.... Now when it's cloudy out they start to talk about how the trees, birds, worms etc must be thirsty... It is such a fun age!
