I'm just wondering how long it takes you all to suction your babies' noses when they are stuffy. Sometimes it takes me up to 15 minutes on each baby before I give up, and my babies just act like I am torturing them the whole time, basically screaming bloody murder. I feel like I get some of the stuff out but not all of it. Is there a certain technique that anyone has that they can share with me? Am I the only imbecile who feels like I'm not using this thing right? Gosh, I feel like an idiot.

I think it helps to plug the side you aren't suctioning. My girls always acted like it was torture too. I can't say I blame them. I don't think I would like it either. I think any little bit helps!!

Have you tried using saline drops to loosen things up? Also, I've found the Nosefrida much more effective than a bulb syringe. (The concept looks gross, but don't worry, the snot gets nowhere near your mouth.)

I never used it. I was told by my pediatrician not to, since it can irritate the babies more than it can help them. Try the saline drops and a humidifier instead.

I just do one good suction up each nostril. My goal is just for no snot running down their faces, I don't expect to get it all out. It takes me about 30 seconds.

That is probably my least favorite aspect of baby care. I still can't do it right! I usually have DH do it. The trade off is, I will cut their nails if he does the nose sucking.

When the boys got a cold we had to use saline drops and a cool mist humidifier. I tried to use the nose thing and it just seemed that nothing ever came out. I even plugged one side and tried. Still nothing really came out. I just have cut it down to using it when there is a little boogie in there. I hate them.

Totally agree to use the saline first and loosen things up and then do it. I only did a couple of suction times. Usually they would sneeze it out too.

DH had to do it (it'snot my thing ;)). He'd just do one good aspiration on each side.

I've had to use it a few times, mostly because there was a big one that I wanted to dislodge, lol. I'm not too fond of it either, but I like saline drops.

When the boys were babies I plugged the side that I was not suctioning. They didnt like it to much but I was in and out and done in a minute or two. Sometimes I would put the saline nose drops up their first and then suctioned a few times. But for me plugging one side was key for me.
