That D@*N bird!

I have struggled with napping issues with my boys for a long time. Mainly, they typically don't really nap for long. I had been reluctantly accepting of that given that they are pretty good night time sleepers. However, a new little bird moved in to the bird hotel (ficus tree) in our backyard and it is a LOUD one. Jackson is now waking up at 6:00am every morning with this darn bird, who is trying to wake the whole neighborhood with his obnoxious song. My boys go to bed at 6-ish and used to sleep till 7:30. Now they are getting up at 6 and by 7 they are in tears from tiredness. Both boys whined ALL morning today. They wouldn't let me get anything done at all. It was so torturous that I put them down for a nap at 10:15. They fell right asleep. I guess it's going to be a 2-nap day, but really I just don't know what to do.

I should add that on Saturday morning no one heard the bird and the boys both slept till almost 7:30. I don't think they are just ready for less night time sleep. Also, if I put them to bed later, they still end up waking with the bird at 6am.

Has anyone else dealt with this? Any ideas, short of cutting down the tree or letting my indoor cats roam free outdoors for awhile (neither are really an option of course!)?

How about buying a shot gun?

    Kidding!

Do you have a white noise machine with an adjustable volume? I have turn ours louder on garbage days.

I would second Aimee's idea (not the shotgun) but to either increase the volume of the white noise machine/ or radio. I would be totally frustrated by that bird too and letting the cats have at it would be so tempting. Good luck Erin!

Can you put a giant birdfeeder in your neighbors tree?

I'm sorry!! That is so frustrating. Another vote here for a fan/white noise machine. UGH!! sleep=sanity!!!

Definitely a humidifier or a fan that will block the sound out! The humidifier I used in the boys room went out so I plugged up a fan on medium speed but I didn't want it directly blowing on them cause I use it for the noise so I pointed it toward the wall.

I feel for you. We had a problem with a neighbor's barking dog a couple years ago -- I was pregnant with K&K and hardly sleeping, and not only would it wake up my hugely cranky and pregnant self, but it would wake up Nadia. At dawn. OMG, I nearly went out of my mind.

The birds bug me, too, and I have to sleep with white noise myself. One tip -- if your guys don't like (or aren't used to) white noise in their room, then put it right outside their door after they've fallen asleep.

    Good luck!

Ugh, birds can be so annoying! White noise machines can make all the difference. GL and sweet dreams to the boys!

Thanks, everyone. We cranked up the white noise machine and moved it to Jack's side of the room (near the window). Hopefully that will do the trick. I've never given so many time-outs in my life as I did today!

Hope the noise machine works. If not I wouldn't be opposed to relocating the bird. :)
