I was just curious as to who would do the testing when the twins are born to see if they are faternal or id.? How do they do the testing right when they are born? Do they take some blood from the umbilicol cord? My ob says hes pretty sure faternal but there is still that chance of id. I want to know for sure.

My ob told me that they send a section of the placenta down to the Pathology dept. Some form of testing is done there. Also they check the babies blood types. I guess if these tests are inconclusive then you can go through one of the outside DNA testing companies and send in a cheek swab. The hospital should provide you with information about this if they are unable to determine ID vs. fraternal.

I'm not really sure how it is done since it did not apply to me. But if I had the same sex twins who had the same blood type then I would certainly have it done, I would need to know.

We won't be doing any testing because we know they are identical. We had very early ultrasounds and they are both in the same gestational sac. If we didn't already know, we would definitely find out.

I did not have mine tested, to me they looked very different even at birth so we didn't bother -- the hospital never told us if they sent the placentas off or not -- NOW they are beginning to look more alike and most strangers assume they are identical so it has me second guessing myself but to me they are still SO different!!

We don't know what they are. We are expecting two boys, separate sacs and placentas. They say they are most likely frat but there is still a chance of them being ID. I want to have them tested to know for sure. I am not sure if the hospital does that or not.
