Hello ladies, Last week I took my final blood test and swab. The swab was for Group B Strep infection...for those who are unfamiliar w/what this is, it is a test given in the wks. of 35-37 to see if the mother is carrying a bacteria infection that could be passed along to the infant through birth. When I was told that I tested positive for this infection, I was also told not to be alarmed because there are many healthy mothers who test positive for this bacteria infection. I was also told that what they will do is give me an antibiotic through iv to protect my babies from this bacteria (at delivery). Also at the O.B I took the H&H test (a blood test)...that was to check my iron levels before delivery...well my iron was low but nothing to be alarmed about. The levels of my iron was 10.2 but that it would have been a concern if the levels were 7 and below...so, what's going to be done is that my intake of iron will be increased. I went to the specialist yesterday and the babies were fine,I was not experiencing any contractions.I was told that I would not be receiving any more cervical checks from their office but that from now on out my O.B. will be doing them to see if I dialated any. When I had my one on one w/the specialist...based on the survellience of the babies and with me adding the news of my Group B results... I wanted to know if he could forsee my having the babies around week 37-38..and guess what??? His response was "Mrs. Tannor..based on our survellience of the babies...I don't forsee you going into labor no time soon." I was like..but is it true that full term for twins is 37-38 wks.???? And his response was.."That is a popular misconception..full term for twins is 40 wks. just as it is for a singleton pregnancy...10% of singleton pregnancies don't make it to full term..whereas 20% of twin pregnancies does'nt make it." I was like Oh my gosh...I thought I saw light at the end of this tunnel. (Meaning a delivery date for 37-38 wks.) He went on to say that birthing is best when it occurs naturally and that there are more complications with inducing. So I sucked it up and said that "I can do this." What I would like to get out of this post is stories of women who experienced being pos. of Group B strep and the experience after delivery. Thanks in advance for all responses.

I tested positive for GBS with a couple of my pregnancies. It is very important to get the doses of antibiotics before you deliver. I had a c-section with the twins, but was given the antibiotics anyway. All of my babies were fine.

The Group B strep thing was like a complete non-issue for me. They gave me IV antibiotics at the hospital before delivery, and that was that. No issues with me or the babies. All I would say is make sure to remind the various caregivers at the hospital that you tested positive and need antibiotics so it doesn't slip through the cracks.

I tested positive for Strep B with my daughter. I wound up being induced with her and they just added the antibiotics to my IV - no complications with me or the baby - just something you need to be aware of so they give you the medicine. As far as full term - I really thought it was 37-38 weeks for twins as well. My OB told me that they probably wouldn't let me go past 38 weeks or so because at that point there is no benefit to the babies being in - there is no more room to grow and the placentas can start to break down (which is why I was induced with my DD).

Yep, this exactly. My hospital also had a policy that if you tested positive, you and your baby couldnt' be released for 48 hours. Which was fine by me!!

Hang in there!! Your babies will be here before you know it!

Like the other PP's have said, Strep B isn't a huge deal. My water broke at 35 weeks with my daughter, and I hadn't had the test, so they hooked me up IV wise for the antibiotics anyway, just to be safe. I had a healthy normal vaginal birth, with no complications. My daughter was fine, she had some Resp. distress, which could have been due to being early or a reaction to some of the pain meds they gave me, and had to be in the NICU for a few days.

I had Group B Strep with my first son. As pp have said, it was nothing really. They just put antibiotics in my IV when I went to the hospital in labor. Just a precautionary measure. I was told it doesnt have any effect on the mother, but could be dangerous for baby/ies, so thats why they give meds during labor/delivery.

I knew about the full term being full term, but it depends on whether your Doc is willing to let you go that far, and/or if you have any other determining factors that would make you NEED to go earlier.

Good Luck, and you CAN do it!
