My DS has terrible eczema and cradle cap. Per my ped, I tried using 1% cortisone but even that isn't working. She suggested that if the cortisone didn't work, we might have to switch his formula....any other mom's have to switch formula due to extreme eczema? Any suggested solutions?

Well, for the cradle cap, my SIL SWEARS by Paul Mitchell Baby Shampoo http://www.paulmitchell.com/Products/PaulM...CryShampoo.aspx
She gave us some but I've been afraid to use it because our guys have such dry & sensitive skin.
For the eczema our DR recommends NOT bathing more then 1 time per week and NOT using any soap but rinse with Chamomile Tea. Also use Aquaphor lotion constantly...that's helped us tremendously!

It could be the formula though....you never know until you try I suppose.

For cradle cap I have been told baby oil works good.

my babies had bad eczema and the doctor first had us use Aquaphor it really does work. We also had to change the formula first to Alimentum then to Isomil, which i guessed helped a little. But as girls!suggestd to me the hydrocortisone 1% and the cetaphil have succesfully worked instantly if you try to change the formula and the hydrocort stii doesn't work I would suggest your pedi refer yo to a dermatologist. Not being able to bathe them daily, use soaps or detergents is frusturating sometimes but it has to be done my babes can't wear fleece or polyester either only cotton. Good luck Keep us posted.

I don't know about the eczema, but for cradle cap regular Head and Shoulders shampoo works really well! Just be sure not to get it in their eyes. Also, Josh had a terrible looking rash around his face and neck, and it turned out to be the same thing that causes cradle cap, seborrhea. The Head and Shoulders worked well on it too, and I also used Caldesene Powder on it, which worked wonders! They have Caldesene at Walgreens.

I did olive oil for cradle cap -- I put some in a bowl and used the soft baby brush and gentle scrub to the scalp. some people need to do a second dose the next day. It was gentle and worked right away. Yes, sounds weird but safe. I' ve also heard that in future baths to make sure you rinse the head with clear water.

    Hi there,

I used Selsun Blue for cradle cap (cleared it up in two days). For eczema we do what we call the "soak and seal" we soak for 5 minutes in warm water then put cortisone cream on the flare up spots then slather Cetaphil cream in a really thick coat all over.

I also cut dairy which helped a great deal.

    Best wishes!

my DS had cradle cap also we used the cradle cap care by Gentle Naturals disnay brand. it was awesome we put it on and sooo much brushed off. also u can use olive oil, baby oil, dandruff shampoo. but that worked great for me.

we also went through real bad eczema. i had to stop foods first but it wasnt the foods. i was never told to change formula though. i did go to a dermatologist and what he said was short cool baths, wash with cetaphil, use hydrocortisone 1% OINTMENT NOT CREAM. and then top it off with aquaphor. 3x a day for cortizone and aquaphor. it took 3 days and it looked great now i just use the aquaphor and cetaphil. i was also told if its real irritating for the baby i can give some benadryl. but you have to ask the doctor for dosage info. eczema is very itchy so it helps alot.

Baby oil gel worked wonders on our cradle cap and it wasn't as messy for me as regular baby oil...you can find it in the baby products section. I know our ped said head and shoulders would work but I was afraid of getting in their eyes.

I have one with eczema and we use hypoallergenic, fragrance free products (bath stuff and lotions...I like California Baby...but we didn't start using that until we had the eczema under control...now we perdiocally get a patch here or there but that's it). Baths are pretty quick too because the longer they "sit" in the water, the more it dries out the skin. When we have an "outbreak" we use aquaphor and that generally controls it pretty well. Lotion/slather up kiddo immediately after bath to trap in all the moisture too.

As far as the formula...no idea.

We tried Soy first and I noticed an improvement in the condition of his skin, but it was not the miracle cure I had hoped for. He looked so much better, but he was still scratching. We are now on Alimentum (I can get it for free - otherwise I might still be on soy). Again it gave us some relief, but not a cure.
IMO it's worth the try - if it's a cure then you're sailing. It it's not a cure, you rule out milk as the culprit and work from there.
I have read advice from one doctor who says to take regular lukewarm baths. Give them a short bath and then get them out, dried and moisturised in 3 minutes. The theory is the lukewarm bath is not too drying and it gives you the opportunity to lock in more moisture. I know this goes against every other bit of advice you will get, but I'm just throwing it in there.
As far as creams, we are using something called Eucerin Emollient that is behind the counter (so is Aquaphor around here!). I think it's moisturiser with aquaphor mixed in. When I get sick of seeing the real red bits I use hydrocortisone, but it usually comes right back.
We just discovered creamy Vaseline which seems to work very well on his neck (cheap too!).

We also wash everything in the house with free and clear soap, I try to limit my use of harsh smelling cleansers (who has time to clean anyway?) and I try to stick to cotton for clothes.

For cradle cap we used Nuetrogina T-gel....works great!

For the ezcema, we use Aveeno Cream Mositorizing Body Wash and Lotion along with Aquaphor...that works great!!

We changed formula but it doesn't make a difference with the eczema.
