My boy twin started giving me a really hard time during diaper changes a few weeks ago, and now my girl twin is doing the same thing! As soon as I lay them down, they try to turn over and crawl away (and they are up on a changing table!). When I gently say "no no" and redirect them, they flip out. I feel like I end up hurting them because I am forcibly holding them down while they scream bloody murder through the whole change! I try giving them toys, blowing on their tummies, tickling them.....nothing seems to work that great.
I don't remember my first doing this. Is this just a short stage all kids go through? Any way to fix it??? Thanks!

I soooo feel your pain :( I dread diaper changes now--especially for DS.

My boys haven't started doing this yet, but I remember my Bro and SIL would give my nephew one of his favorite toys during diaper changes to keep him distracted. Then, they would change his diaper QUICKLY!

Just a phase! It helped to give them something they weren't normally allowed to hold - a wipe, the tube of diaper cream, etc. but usually it was just fight through it! It comes and goes now, but isn't nearly as bad now that they can be distracted and coerced more easily - hang in there!

It's a phase, but it might be a long-lived one; my guys will still struggle during diaper changes! :gah: You can try pushing down on one of their hips; this keeps them pinned without hurting them. But what I've found works the best is to keep a bunch of things in the diaper changing area to distract them. I have a set of keys, bulb aspirator, wind-up toys, thermometers, etc. (all things I wouldn't let them play with normally), and hand them something when they lay down. This works almost every time! :D

I think it's a phase as well. However, Annabella would be an angel at diaper changes, and even now-can put up a fight! What if you put like a wind chime hanging down from the ceiling? We were at my friends house this past weekend and she has one above her changing table-it was zoo animals. Annabella laid still while I changed her diaper. Or, like someone else said, a favorite toy or something. I find my cell phone works well for the minute distraction!

Probably just a phase....Michael did this for about two weeks. I even wrote a thread about how he was screaming about everything (diaper, high chair, carseat, etc.). He has chilled out a bit now. Actually, once he got his last two teeth, it seemed to get a whole lot better.

Miss. O is the worst!!! I litereally have to restrain her with my legs or arms to get her bum changed and dressed! I dread it so bad! I try different toys and everything to keep her attention but she manages to distort her body to a point where I literally am breaking a sweat fighting her to get dressed! This has been happening for a few months now and sad to say....its getting worse and worse each day.

Ha! I HATE changing diapers these days. I hope they do all grow out of it!

I think it's a phase as well, and mine are in the midst of it too! The only thing that has worked for me has been to give them something that is not a "toy" while they are up there and take it away when they are done being changed. We have a drawer in our changing table so I pull something out that's safe for them to hold and chew on like a bulb syringe (obviously we clean these well!), digital baby thermometer in the case, box of thermometer covers, etc. They are so happy to explore something new and forbidden that they forget all about the diaper change for long enough for me to change them!

I know its terrible. I rarely use the change table, it turns into such a nightmare. I do it mostly on the floor and have found they stay still if I give then the remote control or something "forbidden". Only once did it get close to the poop LOL!

My girls do it too. It's awful! D is really bad about it, and I sometimes have to hold her down with one hand right up until I have to fasten the diaper. UGH. I find that putting a bib on her and playing peek-a-boo helps a little. I've also thought about putting a ceiling-hanging mobile over the table to grab their attention.

I'm getting really good at putting on the diaper when she's on her hands and knees...then I flip her back over to adjust it.

Unfortunately this is a stage that will last for a while - mine started doing that around 9 months and are still little squirmers! They get very indignant when I flip them back over on their backs to put on their diapers. I have learned to let go and allow them a certain amount of safe flipping time by just wiping them while they lie on their tummies but I have to flip them over to actually put the diaper on (lisamc - you will have to share your method for putting on a diaper while they are on their hands and knees because I am hopeless at that). I also make sure there are lots of interesting toys on the table to distract them with. That helps a lot!
