Does anyone know (on average) how long after going off terbutaline people have gone into labor? I was doin a little research and it seems from the 2-3 things I have found it is within 3 to 5 days. Anyone with experience or that knows, thanks in advance!!!

I was on a contraction stopping med (not terb) and went into labor one week to the day after I stopped taking the pills.

  5. I'm a L&D nurse, and I would say it just depends, sorry if I'm not much help. There's 3 forms of Terb. pills, shots, or a pump. Terb relaxes your uterus, once the drug is out of your system, theres a possibilty of going into labor, if your body's ready. Some people notice contractions right when the next dose is due to be given, and others the terb knocks out the contractions for hours, days; every situation is different. Terb is usually the first drug given for preterm contractios, and deff. does not always work. Are you dilated ? Are you having contractios despite the terb ? Are you drinking plenty of water, and staying off your feet ? These are things that play a factor, which I'm sure you know. jessica

  6. I appreciate all the answers everyone is giving! So much more info than I am finding anywhere else. To answer lovelyboys: I am on the 5mg pills, strict bedrest, drinking plenty of water, and having about a contraction an hour. I am going in for a follow up to a hospital stay and ultrasound tomorrow to see about dialation, but there was not any before. She is stopping the pills and letting whatever happen happen at 34 weeks. I havent found much about if that means I would go back to laboring right away or if it would take a while to "warm up" again...
    Thanks again!!!

I was on terb till week 37 and gave birth exactly two weeks later. I guess it depends on your specific circumstances. Can I ask though why is your dr. stopping the pills week 34? It just seems a little early to me.

I think I was on it for almost 2 months and was 37 weeks with a scheduled c with the girls. I was on it up to the day I had them and was having major contractions while on it. The L&D nurses told me I would have had them right away if I went off of it. HTH

I stopped on Sat night and by Monday morning I was dialated to a 4. I had been on it for 2 months and dialated to a 1 that whole time.[IMG] Honestly if your doc will let you stay on it until at least 36-37 weeks I would really suggest that! Every day/week will make such a difference for your babies!!!

  10. Honestly, I dont know why she chose 34 weeks. Thats just what she said... [IMG]

I took the terb for 10 weeks while I was in the hospital for PTL. I took it in the pill form every 6 hours. The last pill I took was on a Friday night, on Sunday I was contracting all day, Monday I had true labor and gave birth.

I stopped taking the terbutaline at 35 weeks (Friday) and had the twins at 35 weeks 3 days (Monday). I actually went into labor on Sunday but didn't deliver until Monday.

I was on the terb pump starting at 28 weeks, stopped it at 36 weeks, and went into labor at 36 weeks 1 day.

    Good Luck!

I am shocked your doctor said she would take you off of terp at 34 weeks! The babies will be in the NICU and if you haven't experienced being in the NICU it is the closest thing to **** and if you can avoid it, I would. If she still says yes, I would get a second opinion. At 34 weeks they will be in the NICU.

I was on terb when I was pregnant with my daughter and put on bedrest at 22 weeks until delivery. I was taking terb for about almost 2 months.. then my doctor took me off and I went full term with out any more contractions.
    hope that helps.

I was on the terb pump. I got to remove it 36W4D @ 5am. My water broke 36W5D @ 6:50am!
Hang in there. I had a TON of contractions b/t weeks 31-33 & then at 34W - it all stopped.
    Good luck,

I only took mine when I needed to, and I managed to hold off until 37w3d. Everyone's body is different though.

Lovelyboys is right terb relaxes your uterus. I think where people get confused is that terb is used to prevent preterm labor contractions or help calm an irritable uterus it DOES NOT stop true labor. If you are in true labor there isn't much that can stop it. Where terb can beneficial is if you are having contractions that are changing your cervix the thinking is terb will relax the uterus so that it doesn't contract as much therefore it hopefully doesn't change the cervix along with bedrest of course.

I was on terb shots and pills around the clock when I was pg with my twins on hospital bedrest. Despite all those meds my water broke at 34 weeks and I gave birth then. With my son I had an irritable uterus and was prescribed terb as needed but did not need to take it around the clock like I did with the girls. I contracted every hour till I gave birth at almost 40 weeks with him. I was told not to take it past 34 weeks also because the risks of the meds like terb, mag, etc outweigh the benefits. Good luck with your pg.

  20. Thanks again to all the responses! I think I understand so much more about this medication and what to expect now. Besides the incredible shaking that I feel, the contractions have eased. The dr also told me yesterday that the shaking would calm down over time and the contractions would come back because as your body becomes used to Terb, it loses its effectiveness.
