Hello all! I have read a few posts to get this question answered, but I was wanting to get more than one or two answers, just out of curiosity.

How long after discontinuing the use of Terbutaline did actual labor start?

A little about me...Went into hospital at about 30 weeks and was having contractions, started Terb in hospital and went home on it and bedrest. Back in hospital at 31 weeks for contractions and had mag sulfate, then back on Terb.

My doctor says he will have me discontinue use at 36 weeks because it would be fine to deliver any time after that. So that is why I am wondering.

Thanks everyone for your replies! Now that I am almost 34 weeks, I am getting so anxious to meet my sweet baby boys! But, not too soon, I want to be able to go home with them!

My OB told me the exact same thing. I had an appt on exactly my 36th week. We were supposed to talk about going off the terb at that appt, but she found me fully effaced and at 5cm. I had been faithfully taking my Terb up until 2 hours before my visit! I had my two munchkins a little less than 2 hours later, and we all came home together 3 days later.

    Good luck!!

I was on Terbutaline from 28-35 weeks. They took me off at 35 weeks and I went into labor that night. The doctor checked me at 6pm and told me he would be doing a c-section at 8:30pm. Good luck!! :)

I took it from 22 to 36 weeks...at 37 weeks, my water broke and I had the babies (exactly 7 days after stopping terb). They were "near term" and healthy enough to come right home with us (2 days after birth). GL!

With my 2nd singleton, I was put on Terbutaline at 24 weeks for PTL. One of my OBs prescribed it, and another one in the practice told me he didn't believe in the stuff. He said, if labor is going to start for real, there's no stopping it. That's the old timer talking, and I must say, five years later, the entire practice I go to doesn't believe in tocolytics anymore. I've taken terb and procardia. With my twins, I asked for Procardia, but my doc only gave in to that request because he thought it would give me a peace of mind. I took it only on occasion when I felt like I was painlessly contracting more.

(I was on bedrest for 13 weeks/7weeks in hospital, had Stage I TTTS, history of PTL, early dilation, a cerclage, etc. I was very fortunate to get to 34w1d.)

With my first bout of bedrest (11 weeks with a singleton), I took terb regularly daily, and by 30 weeks, it seemed not to be working anymore. I was dilated 2 plus cm at 32 weeks, 5 plus cm at 37 weeks, and still made it to 39w1d.

With my second bout of bedrest (13 weeks with twins), I took the occasional procardia when I felt nervous about my painless contrax, and it was more for a peace of mind. I was definitely dilated and all that pretty early on with a funneling cervix. I had painless contrax from 19 weeks on, but didn't deliver until 34w1d.

I was on oral terb from about 24 weeks to 29 weeks at which point it stopped working completely. So then I was put on a terb pump, directly into my leg and put on bedrest. I was told I could go off at 36 weeks also, but chose to stay on until 36 weeks 3 days because my doctor was out of town. I discontinued it on a Sunday, had multiple contractions Monday, went to L & D and was sent home due to no progress. The following morning my water broke. So exactly 2 days after stopping the terb I went into labor. My DD came home with me, DS had to stay in the NICU for 7 days due to a tear in one of his lungs.

    Just an update about me...

I went off of the Terb at 36 weeks. My last pill was last Sunday night at 9:30 pm. I have had some contractions, but they do not last very long and tend to go away when I switch positions, so I know they are not "real".

I saw my dr. on Monday and had an NST. Everything was ok and I go again tomorrow for a cervical check, another NST and an ultrasound. I hear that sometimes manual cervical checks can get things going, so it makes me a little nervous. Just the unknown of when labor is going to start is making me nervous! After my check tomorrow, I will be allowed to schedule an induction on the 16th. Dr. doesn't think I will make it that far, but I am glad that he will schedule it as I am sooooo uncomfortable!

Thank you to everyone for your replies. I will keep you updated on what is happening with me!
