Hello ladies! I am 23 weeks preg and have been obsessing over what type of delivery I will have!! I really want to go vaginal (for obvious reasons). Tell me about your experiences? If you had vaginal, were both babies head down? DId they have to turn B? Was that painful??

If you had a section, how did that go? Why did you have a c section? How was recovery at home? When did you feel like "yourself" again??

Thank you guys! Congrats on your bundles of joy! I will be joining you in about 13-15 weeks :D

I had a section at 34 weeks (doctors ordered for babies health) I fully recovered within 2 weeks ( was actually a bridesmaid in a wedding 2 weeks later.) It was painful and hard to stand up straight..but manageable. I did need a suppository to help my bowels get going. Other than that it was no biggie. Scar wasn't even that bad. Hope you get the vaginal u want..but c is not so bad:)

I had a scheduled c/s at 38 weeks because Baby B was breech. I personally didn't want to have to recover from both types of delivery. It was just what I was comfortable with. And to be honest, I had a wonderful recovery. Sure, it's slow going, and I had a small opening in the incision site, but overall-it was a great recovery. I remember at discharge, the nurse was talking to me about things NOT to do-one of them being bending over, and I bent down to pick something up! Ooops!

For me, what was crucial to the recovery was getting up out of bed ASAP, as well as staying on top of your meds-two very important things I learned here! I had the boys by 1, was out of recovery by 2, and was gotten out of bed at 10pm. So-a good eight hours... The rest is history... When home, I limited myself to the stairs once/day(kinda), and took it easy.

I had such a good c/s experience, that I opted to have a repeat c/s 19 months later with my daughter. Again, it was a wonderful experience. I will say, the procedures on cleaning the incision site gets a little tedious after a few weeks, but overall it was great for me.

I hope you get to have the delivery you want! And good luck!

i had an emergency c-section at 33 1/2 weeks but i always had a feeling owen wouldn't turn anyway. i was open to the idea of a vaginal birth but didn't realistically think it would happen. the procedure was a breeze, and it happened so quickly. i remember lying on the table and the doctor telling me he was going to get started. i made him promise to keep baby A and baby B in the correct order because i already knew who would get which name. so he agreed and maybe a minute later he said, "here's baby A. here's baby B." and then they were done and closing up. it really was amazing how fast it was.

the first 24 hours were the hardest because they make you get up out of bed. one piece of advice: don't turn down the pain killers. they're there for a reason and they can help you through the first part of recovery faster. i tried to do the tough-girl thing and pass up painkiller opportunities but it's totally not worth it to tough it out.

i was feeling fully functional in 2 weeks. i had a good experience and felt like it was a lot less scary than i thought it would be.

Our plan was to deliver vbac with twin B delivered breech. Baby A was head down and a pound bigger than B. Everything was going great. I went in for an office visit and found out I was 5 & 1/2 cm with contractions that barely hurt! (35w6d) They sent me to L&D from there. I had to get an epidural just in case we had to do a c-secion. It was placed wrong (don't want to scare you, so I will save the horrible details). Turned into an emergency c-section with me under general immediately after the epidural was placed.

Vaginal deliveries are so much easier, for me at least, to recover from. I'm pretty upset with the anesthesiologist to the point that we have spoken with a lawyer. I have now been told that I'm never again allowed a vaginal birth since I've had two c-secions.

I was induced & delivered vaginally at 38+ weeks. Lila, baby A, delivered with little trouble (7 lbs 9 oz) but Luke, baby B was delivered by breech extraction. They didn't really even try to turn him, they just reached in, grabbed him by the feet (guided by a second doctor with an ultrasound machine) and pulled him out. Despite being huge (7 lbs 13 oz) he was delivered exactly 6 minutes after his sister with no real problems, despite the rough delivery. I didn't have a lot of pain since I had an epidural, it was a bit uncomfortable but nothing horrible. Afterward, the recovery wasn't really any worse than I had had with my singletons.

I had a c/s at 36 wks 2 days when my water broke. Scheduled c/s at 37 wks 6 days because I've had 2 prior c/s's. My c/s took a little longer than normal because I've had 2 and they had to go through some scar tissue that was there, but otherwise was a piece of cake. Had the babies at roughly 5:30 in the morning, got up walking about 12 hrs later, right after my last shot of the "good" pain meds! :p Ditto not skipping the pain meds, and keep track of when they are due for yourself! The nurses here didn't automatically bring my meds every 4 hrs, I had to buzz them for them, which I didn't know with my first c/s. I got behind on the pain meds and had a very rough couple of days trying to get ahead of the pain, so don't miss any doses!!

As for recovery, I showered myself the next day, and went home the second day. Was in the hospital a total of about 2.5 days. I had to take it a little easy at home, since I had 2 older children I had to be careful about them crawling on me and no picking up my dd who was 2.5 yrs old, I did end up with a bladder infection from the catheter, once I realized that's what my pain was from and got on antibiotics for it, it cleared up quickly.

Overall I've never had a vag delivery so I have no point of comparison, but having had 3 c/s's and no major problems from any of them, I can safely say a c/s isn't the worst thing in the world ;)

I had a scheduled induction at 38 weeks. Baby A was head down, Baby B was transverse. They started the pitocin at 9 am and Baby A came (vaginally) with very little problems at 9.53 pm. They turned Baby B (it took them over 30 minutes to do so), but by then my cervix started to close up. It wasn't painful as I had the epi.

I was rolled back from the OR to my regular birthing room. It took another 4.5 hours for my cervix to dilate again, and by then I developed a fever (well, I always do). Anyhow, Baby B came at 2.23 am the following day, also vaginally.

I was lucky to have my doctor who was with me the whole time. Under medical supervision I could give birth vaginally to both of my babies, who now have different birth days.

I was induced and had a vaginal delivery at 37weeks w an epidural (JIC we needed and emergency C) Baby A was a breeze to deliver (I think b/c I laboured w him) baby b ended up being a forcep delivery. He went to the NICU for a few hours, they said his blood sugars were low but I think the poor little guy was in shock.. having his amniotic fluid broke and then ripped out of his home in a matter of minutes lol The recovery was ok w mine, but I hemorrhaged after their delivery.. my OB did a d&c but I still had a TON of bleeding afterwards. I wasn't sore, but was a little scared. I think w any baby you just have to remember to have a BM within the first 24hrs (sorry if that's TMI) but it's something I WISH someone had told me after I had dd1.

I had a c-section at 38 weeks, scheduled because baby A was breech. Once I had the catheter removed, I was up and walking around (I believe that was out early the following day). I also had a tubal ligation done at the same time, so I was tender but okay. It take me a couple of weeks to fully feel like myself physically and I think prior to that I might have pushed myself a little too much because I did have one day of severe pain but I took it easier after that & had no problems since. Emotionally, my hormones were all over the place and it probably took me 6 weeks to feel more like myself emotionally.
    Good luck!

I had a scheduled c-section @ 37w5d because twin B was transverse and I didn't want to take the risk of having to have an emergency c-section after a vaginal birth if she didn't turn.

My older child was born vaginally. And I can tell you that it was really, really nice to know exactly when the girls would be born and not have the unpredicitability of labor. Granted, I did not have a great labor with my son - it was long and I had to push for two hours, needing forceps to deliver him and I tore. It was not easy on me nor was it easy on my son. I liked the fact that I knew when the girls were going to come, and that they weren't going to be as stressed via labor as my first one was.

As far as recovery, I think the first week after the c/s was harder on me than the first week after my vaginal birth. But, I also think that I felt better SOONER after my c/s than I did with my vag. birth. Once the incision pain started to go away, I felt almost as good as new, where with my vaginal birth, I didn't feel right for at least a month, esp. regarding (TMI!!!) going to the bathroom.

So, having been through both, I think each has its merits and issues. I am glad, though, that I did the c/s for the girls just because of the predictability factor and just knowing they would be born quickly and safely, with all of the medical support ready for them if they needed it.

The plan was to deliver vaginally because both babies were head down but I ended up having an emergency c-section at 35 weeks, 2 days (went to L&D because I noticed decreased fetal movement and during monitoring their heart rates disappeared and the doc thought it would be best to get them out in case they were in distress). It was a little overwhelming but it all happened so fast I didn't have time to worry about it. The recovery was certainly painful but I made sure to get up and walk the halls as soon as possible (the morning after the section). That is very important. The constipation issue was also rough so if you do get a c-section, don't turn down the stool softeners the nurse offers!! It took me about 2 weeks to start to move in a normal way again and probably another few weeks before I could get up from bed without any pain. It also didn't help that I had been on bedrest for almost two months prior to delivering so my body was pretty out of shape. I sincerely hope you get the delivery you're planning on but just be prepared for anything - I never imagined I would be delivering via c-section but I made sure to read up on it beforehand just in case. Just the fact that you are asking about other people's deliveries shows that you are doing the right thing by getting informed. Best of luck throughout the rest of your pregnancy and beyond! :friends:

All 4 of mine were born vaginally. Regarding my twins, I went in to labor at 33wks3d and after a few hours if trying to stall/stop it, went on to deliver vaginally. Baby A was head down, Baby B breech (feet first) After I delivered A, B stretched out, happy to have room I guess  so doc reached up and caught a foot, guided him down a bit, and I pushed him out, no prob bob. My recovery was great, save for a pounding headache that lasted days. We finally discovered the pain was caused by grief, having to leave the boys at the hospital was THE hardest thing I have ever had to do in 36 yrs of life. My headache eased everytime I went to the NICU, shedding silent tears the whole time I visited and cared for them. Thankfully they had no issues, they were kept mainly because of age not size and after 11 days came home :woohoo: Now 2 yrs later we're going for birth #5, hopefully vaginal, DEFINITELY the last!

I had a c-section because my first delivery experience was HORRIBLE and ended in a c-section. It was so great. I got to the hospital at 7am at exactly 38 weeks, and the babies were born at 8:45. I was in my room with the babies by noon. My ODS was able to come visit that same day. Recovery both times has been good - maybe even better with the twins. I did take pain meds for 1-2 weeks both times, but there was never a time when I felt I couldn't get around, climb stairs, carry the babies, etc after I got out of the hospital. I was careful about "overdoing it".

ETA - like PP, I also had a terrible constipation problem. TERRIBLE. I wish they had treated it more aggressively from the start.

I delivered at 38.5 weeks and both babies were head down. I was induced (because Baby A was loosing weight) and went through 21 hours of labour (i'm canadian, that is how we spell labour). I went into the OR to push and my back litereally seized up and we ended up in a c-section. The section itself was not ideal - and I felt everything. I was in the hospital for a week because I had Ilias (my bowels shut down). When I got home I was still really swollen from all the IV fluids so it took me about 2 weeks to feel completely normals again. I had a 16 month old at home at the time so I did have people lined up to help me in those first 2 weeks.

GOOD LUCK with your delivery! Just go into it open minded and that way you won't feel so cheated....ya know!?

  16. I begged my doctor to let me try for a vaginal delivery from the time I found out it was twins. Because they are our first kiddos, she really wanted to do a c-section, but finally agreed to go for it with me as long as I understood there was the possibility of vaginal delivery with A and c-section with B. My baby
A was head down the entire time, but B was transverse or breech up until 3 days before delivery!

I ended up being induced at 36 1/2 weeks. Went in at 7am, got the epidural at 11:15am (in case of emergency c-section). Lucy was born at 11:42am and Jane came flying out at 11:44am. It was a great experience!

I went into pre-term labor at 28w6days. They were able to hold off delivery for 5 days but after that they could no longer stop it. From the beginning I was hoping to have a vag delivery, but after going into pre-term labor I figured that was very unlikely, especially since B was transverse throughout my entire pregnancy. However, the hospital I was at was used to high risk deliveries and they were willing to let me try a vag delivery, they actually encouraged it. They did a final ultrasound the day of the delivery and B was now more diagonal as opposed to completely sideways, so the doctor in charge said she was hopeful that once A was out of the way that B would go head down into the birth canal. Though she said it was possible that he would just go back to be completely transverse. Anyway, I went to the OR room for delivery and pushed out baby A after 10 minutes or so, and they had a few nurses on each side of me holding B in place so that once A was out of the way B didn't do a "somersault" :) B was still pretty diagonal but the doctor reached up there and positioned him as best she could. After 15-20 very tense minutes as she positioned B she finally gave me the go ahead to push and B came out no problem then. I was soooooo glad that I avoided a C-section! Now granted, my babies were under 3 lbs so they weren't all that hard to push out ;) But it was nice to be able to walk up to the NICU the next day and drive myself to the hospital once I was discharged.

Best of luck to you and I hope you have a safe and relatively easy full term delivery!

ETA: I'm probably unusual but my labor was actually very easy! The contractions were only enough for me to curl my toes up and hold my breath some, but I happily accepted any and all pain meds, heh. And I was laughing and joking while receiving the epidural as well as when I was 9cm dilated and sending texts/FB posts right up until they wheeled me back to the OR :) So not all labors are brutal, though I'm probably the exception to the rule.

I feel the same way. My delivery with the twins was actually the easiest & most pleasant delivery of my 4 pregnancies. I give all the credit to the epidural. They don't give them for just any delivery here, there has to be a reason, so my first deliveries I didn't have one. Holy cow! It was so much more pleasant & enjoyable with it!

I was put on bed rest and an IV with home monitoring to stop contractions when I was at 28 weeks. My doc took me off the contraction IV (totally forgot what that was called already) when I was 34 weeks. I went in for my weekly visit 2 or 3 days later (had a feeling something was wrong) I was contracting every 3 min and they sent me to L & D where my water broke like an hour or so later, within a few hours I was dilated to a 10 and had to wait for the doc on call (cause my doc went on vacation after he took me off my IV URG). I actually had to wait about 1 1/2 hours for him to finish another delivery. Ha - then it was smooth sailing when they got me wheeled in to the OR I delivered Baby A after a couple of rounds of pushes and Baby B just 2 pushes later. It was really a super easy delivery, just the waiting was the worst part! They were both heads down for delivery but had bounced around during the pregnancy. They spent 9 days in NICU just as feeders/growers. Good luck to you!!

The girls were a c/s after I went into labor at 29.5 weeks (DS was vaginal). Meg was breech and we all agreed that a c/s would be less traumatic than a breech birth with the tiny little girls. Went great and had an easy recovery. When we found out we were expecting twins again I figured c/s for sure, but was praying for a VBAC. I talked to my Dr early on about it and she assured me that as long as both were vertex I could try for a VBAC. Griffin (B) had been breech for much of the pregnancy so I thought we'd have a c/s for sure. Went into spontaneous labor at 35 weeks and was 9cm when they checked me. They called for an u/s to double check position and sure enough he had flipped at the very last minute and I delivered both boys vaginally a few minutes later with no meds. (They said by that time if they had had to do a c/s that it would have been under general - I have very fast labors and there wouldn't have been enough time for a spinal or epidural even if I had needed one.) It was by FAR my easiest labor and delivery. I pushed twice for Kian, once for Griffin. I felt completely normal a few days later. I'm so thankful that my Dr agreed to let me try a VBAC since my recovery was much easier than my c/s recovery (and I had a good c/s experience!)

Emerg c-section at 33 weeks due to one twin not growing as well, Dr. decided she would do better on the outside. Likely would have ended up with c-sec regardless because baby A was breech. Healing wasn't too bad. They put morphine in your spine when they do the spinal and that made me throw up non stop for 48 hrs as well as the meds they give you for pain. After 2 1/2 days I just wanted to go home and take regular old Advil. The scar is so low you can't even see it. Looks a little scary at first but will fade to nothing. Overall,(other than the puking) not horrible. And honestly, you will be so happy to have those precious babies, it doesn't much matter how they get here. congrats!!!

My blog has a bit more detailed of what happened 4 weeks ago if you wanted to check that out.

    Here's the summary though :)

32 weeks started to have contractions, was admitted to hospital, 2 days later found out I had severe Pre-E and HELLP. They had to deliver via C-section due to risking my life. Which was the best choice we made! I bled out pretty bad on table because of the HELLP and was in rough condition in the hospital for about 3 days being completely out of it. My incision is healing perfectly fine and being only a month since then I'm feeling great! I took it very easy for the first 2 weeks but walked lots since having to see the twins in the NICU. We were hoping for vaginal but it just wasn't in the cards for us. IF you have a c section I suggest walking as soon as you feel up to it! It helps that much more and I think recovery is a lot quicker. BUT also rest when you can. I feel like that's all I did, Rest, walk, rest walk lol. After the fact I would say it wasn't bad experience and would be OK with another C-section although we do plan to try VBAC if we have another child.

My twins are my first and I pretty much expected a C/S because A was breech from my 20 wk US on. Every US I would hope she flipped but she would still be breech (and hiding; we didn't know she was a girl till delivery!). They were originally scheduled for 38 weeks 2 days but I had them a week earlier. I went in for a routine US and B was much smaller than A so they decided to deliver me that day. It was almost better that way because I didn't have all night before the surgery to toss and turn and worry. My recovery wasn't bad and by 1 week I was only taking Aleve and by 2 weeks I didn't feel like I had surgery at all. I can't even see my incision now.

I think the biggest part of healing is just your body recovering from childbirth, regardless of the type of delivery. Your uterus will be sore and crampy (it will recover faster if you nurse), you will pee and sweat out all the extra fluid, your bowels will have to recover from being squished for months, you may have carpal tunnel or hip pain that takes a while to go away and you will be exhausted and hormonal.

So, take a deep breath and start figuring out who your support system will be so that when you come home with them you have someone to bring you groceries, watch a baby while you shower or nap, help with laundry, etc. You will enter "survival mode" for the first month or so! Good luck and keep us posted!

I was induced at 36 weeks b/c of sudden and severe pre-e. Both babies were head down so I delivered vaginally with an epidural (that I still contend did not fully work). It was a lot more traumatic than what I expected...I'm not sure what I expected exactly, lol. Baby B for me was 20% larger than A so that made it a little rougher. B is also my boy so after DD delivered, he stretched out and got lazy. So after 45 minutes of a nurse shoving down on my belly and my dr stretching me out so my cervix wouldn't close up...he was born fine. :) It was not a pleasant 45 minutes...but I healed quickly and barely remember the pain by now!

We were planning (and hoping!) for a vag delivery, since both boys were vertex. I was induced at 36w 6d, as Baby B had stopped growing in the weeks prior. But after 56 hours, and failing to progress past 2cm, we decided on a c-section. Just before the decision for the c/s I had some fentanyl for pain relief. Turns out that Baby A was posterior (which explained all the lovely back labour!) so that was what was contributing to the failure to progress. So just after midnight @ 37weeks 2 days, they were born. I was kind of sad that it didn't happen the way I had hoped, but after 2.5 days of labour, I was ready for them to come out.

Recovery for me wasn't as bad as I envisioned. I made sure I got walking around that day. And as all the others have mentioned, don't pass on the pain medications afterwards! I felt pretty close to normal after 2 weeks.

I had my girls @ 35 weeks. I had an elected c-section even though both babies presented themselves head down..turns out it was a miraculous decision but that's another story. I went into labor naturally which started the morning I had them. It just felt like constant period cramps (for lack of a better description). I drank water, laid on my left side, took a shower, but nothing would make them stop. About 2 pm or so I started really getting heavy contractions, got to the hospital at about 4:30 and was having contractions about 4 minutes apart, however, I was not dilating..again, another story. Because it was on New Year's Eve, they asked me if I would like to wait and try to have the first New Year's baby...I promptly said NO, get them out! So a little before 6:00 that night they wheeled me to the operating room and I had my girls at 6:14 and 6:15...good end to a stressful pregnancy. No NICU; Sarah was 5 lbs 12 oz. and Allison was 5 lbs. 9 1/2 oz.

First - congrats to you! Exciting times. :)

I had a scheduled c-section at 38 weeks exactly. I was so bummed but never crosses my mind now...lol. Baby A (Jude) was breech and Baby B (Zoe) transverse. OB would have delivered with Baby A vertex. She turned at 32 weeks vertex and turned back breech at 36 weeks. We checked that morning (I was trying everything in the book to get that girl to turn - she was sitting on her butt with her legs down) but nothing (I think the nurses were giggling at me but went through the motions anyway.) C-section ended up being very easy recovery for me, the spinal hurt for literally 1.5 secs. Surprisingly I remember not being that nervous - I had developed that PUPPS rash 4 days before and I had heard it stopped itching immediately once we delivered - it was great motivation and they were right. I used the pain meds a week, was walking that day of surgery. Guess it was meant to be - no issues at all. They were 5.0 and 5.2. We nursed and our last night there we let them go to the nursery every 2.5 hours between feedings. I HIGHLY recommend that. I wished we would have done that all 3 nights! I also found out we could have stayed 2 extra nights due to twins...we would have stayed - were not ready to be turned loose. But you do what you have to do. Surround yourself with support. I do remember clearly that being in the hospital in our quiet room with our two precious ones was one of the best times of our lives that we will never forget. It got crazy once we came home...LOL.

I was on bedrest from 24 weeks-37 weeks due to PTL. I was on hospital bedrest 5 times in that time span. I had a section because Baby A was breech and Baby B was transvers. I had a vaginal birth with my first, and I would have LOVED to have had one with the twins as well. I much perfered my vaginal birth experience as I was up and walking 2 hrs after Donevan was born. It took me about a day to get out of bed with the twins because of the cathetor, and it toko about 3 days before I could stand up straight. I was prob about 4 weeks PP before I started to feel myself again

Wow! Our deliveries were within days of each other and were so similar. Our twins were born at 37 weeks 1 day and I was induced because I had been over 5 cm dialated for almost 2 weeks. Both babies were head down. Baby A came vaginally after a few pushes but Baby B would not get into proper position so after about 15 minutes they had to do an emergency c-section. I also could feel absolutely everything because the anesthesiolgist basically messed up...the OR was chaos during this timeframe.

Afterwards, I also developed an ilias and was so swollen. Then I caught c-dif infection so that made it even more interesting because I had high fever, nausea, etc. I was in the hospital for 2 weeks after delivery and was also crazy swollen from the IV fluids when I came home. I could barely walk because of the swelling and it also took about 2-4 weeks more to feel normal. My first delivery with my son was nothing like this.

To the orignal poster... I think these situations are fairly uncommon so I hope our stories don't make you more nervous. But like Robynsegg said... it is best to go into the delivery knowing that things may not go the way that you planned. But most important is that you leave the hospital with 2 healthy babies! Consider it a nice bonus if your delivery and post-partum stay go according to your plan. :)

My water broke at 37 weeks 1 day and I delivered both babies vaginally. I went to the hospital at 3:00pm and they started pitocin at 4. By 10pm, I was in a ridiculous amount of pain and by 1:00am I had had enough and got an epidural. The epidural allowed my body to relax enough to dilate fully and by 6:50am I was ready to push. My boy was born at 7:35am and my daughter was born at 8:12am. It was an amazing experience!!!
    Best of luck!

I had a healthy pregnancy until 28 weeks, when my water broke with twin B's sac. 4 days later they had to be born because my placenta was tearing away. It was an emergency c-section obviously, they needed to get the babies out really fast, even though I was already in labor, and had been for 8 hours (contractions 2 mintues apart I hardly felt them). They messed up on my epidural (after they finally got it on the 4th try), it was in the wrong spot so I was numb for a little while, then it wore off just before baby A was born, & I felt EVERYTHINGfor about 2 minutes until they put me under general ana. The recovery was painful of course, just with any surgery. I ended up ripping out 9 of the 14 staple's (yes, my so called doctor used staples.... not a usual thing these days), about 3 days after the c-section, so they had to stitch me up again. My recovery was long because I traveled ALOT trying to see my sick piemie's as much as I could.

I had a surprisingly easy delivery. I had a vaginal delivery at 36 weeks after laboring for only 10 hours and after the epidural, the labor was a breeze. My epi did start to wear off just as I began to push, so I felt some discomfort, but it wasn't bad. Both babies were head down when I went into labor but they still put me in an OR to deliver in case they had to do an emergency c-section, so there were like a million people in there with me. I pushed out baby A about 15 minutes after I started pushing and baby B was only 2 minutes behind her. The longest and most painful part was the doctor trying to push out all of the placenta and blood, because they had trouble getting me to stop bleeding, and that wasn't that bad. My girls were perfectly healthy and didn't even have to go to NICU. I did develop some kind of infection, though, and had a temp of 104 for almost 24 hours, but they had me on antibiotics and we all left the hospital on the third day after delivery. I did have to go back 3 weeks later for a DNC because there was placenta left in my uterus and I developed an infection, but that is pretty rare. I still think it is because I was originally pregnant with triplets and I lost one, so I think it was part of that ones placenta.

I stressed my whole pregnancy about how hard the labor would be and it turns out it was really easy! Recovery for me was a breeze, since I only had a small tear. I took it easy because doc said I had to, but I felt fine by the time I left the hospital. Just don't stress out and GOOD LUCK! It probably won't be nearly as bad as you imagine it :).
