Teething help! Does teething seem to bother babies worse at night and if so why? Why does it hurt more at night?

I'm wondering if teething is what's bothering Cooper at night. He was doing great sleeping 7p-7a and then right before his 1st tooth popped in he had 2-3 nights where he woke up once so I would feed him 1/2 a normal bottle and he would go right back to sleep. Then it happened again before his 2nd tooth. Well now we are on his 3rd tooth(his 1st top one) and the night wakings are happening again but he's not wanting to go back to sleep! I feed him just 3oz b/c I figure that's the only way to get him back to sleep. He used to lay right back down but now he's wanting to stay awake. It's taken me an hour to get him back down the last 2 nights. I don't talk to him, turn on the lights or anything. I just feed and immediately start to try and rock him. Thankfully the loud babbling and crying hasn't woke his brother yet.

Also Eli has his 1st tooth starting to come through, I felt it this morning, woo hoo!!! Funny thing is about 10 minutes before his bedtime last night he started crying(not his normal fussiness) but the kind when he is in pain. He cried for a few more minutes after he ate and then he slept all night.

Why does it seem to be worse at night?

Also, what do you ladies do for it? So far we have just given Tylenol right before bed but it's obviously not working or lasting through the night.

I am probably not the person to ask, b/c my girls haven't had any teeth come in yet. But I have heard alot use Hyland teething tablets.

I think it is worse at night because all of the sensory stimuli of the day is gone (noise, light, etc.). There are less distractions. I know when I have pain it is always worse at night.

We use Motrin (which lasts for 8 hours) and it really seems to help. I usually give it to them if they wake up. When I knew a tooth is coming in, I just give it before bed. They also like the cold teethers when they wake up.

My girls had four teeth come in at once. They were 5 months old at the time. It was a nightmare. However, my pediatrician suggested Hylands teething tablets, that you can get at your local pharmacy or drug store. They work wonders and are all natural. We would give them two tablets a piece before we put them to bed at night and at naptime and it really helped.

    Thanks Ladies!

We bought the Hylands Teething Tablets and gave 2 at bedtime and there were no night wakings! Cooper still woke up at 5:30 but that's better!

Utopia- I just saw that your girls were born on New Years Eve- how cool!

    Stephanie,

Grace was fussy for like a week, then 2 teeth appeared and she was happy again. She woke up at night maybe 2 times during that fussy period, and she pretty much refused to eat for several days. Now she's drooling and chewing on things a lot so I think another tooth is getting ready to appear. But she's not too fussy.

Lily is whiny, miserable, grumpy, grouchy, ... I could go on and on. And it has been for at least a month now. She's been waking up about 3 times a night, usually starting at 2am or later. We give her Tylenol before her bedtime bottle and that must keep her sleeping until that 2am mark. I was all ready to try Motrin or those teething tablets but didn't get to the store to buy any, then magically the last 2 nights she slept through the night with no wakeups. She still has no teeth though and she's still whiny and grouchy during the day.

So I'm going to try those teething tablets because the poor girl is miserable. I wish her teeth would pop!!!! If those don't help I'm going to call the pedi to make sure it is okay to give her Children's Motrin.
