teething pain question

DD got her first two teeth last week with no fuss, just a little wakeful overnight. She is still waking up at odd times overnight, even though it's been a few days since they popped through.

DS, on the other hand, is super grumpy and not nursing well, not sleeping well, not doing anything well except being upset. He had a very slight cold a few weeks ago, but that seems to be all gone. I had a viral sore throat last week and now a lingering cough, but I don't think he has it. His gums aren't red or very swollen, but neither were DD's when she was teething. He has been chewing on everything for a few weeks and does seem more comfortable when I massage his gums. Teething tablets and Tylenol sometimes help, sometimes not.

How do I know if he's teething or if it's something else? Also, would DD still have teething pain now, or is she just restless because he is?? <_<

    Thanks for your advice!

I think if you can feel on his gums you might be able to tell if they feel soft or hard, like teeth just under the surface.

 I hope whatever it is that he feels better soon!

I hope your little ones feel better soon. I agree with Aimee, if you can feel around on his gums and feel something pointy or he yelps in pain, he's definitely teething. My DS's gums never looked swollen and red when he gets teeth, where as my DD's gums do. My DS also seems to find teething much more painful then my DD, teething always seemed to go easier for her.
If it continues and you are not comfortable with what's going on or not sure what it is, I would definitely place a call to your pedi. Good luck!

Personally, I would give him a dose of Tylenol and see if that helps. And if it does, then you know that it might possibly be pain related to teething.

Tylenol did help him to nurse, so it may be teething. I don't feel any hanges in his goms, although he does like me to massage them. But I didn't notice differences in DD's gums last week, and her teeth popped right out.

Are they still painful after the teeth are through the gums? DD hasn't been sleeping well even though both lower incisors have been out for several days. Teething tablets help her calm at night, but I don't want to use them unnecessarily.

It might be possible that she might be getting more teeth or have some residual soreness from when the original teeth came in. I don't think it would be too bad to give her teething tablets if she's still cranky and restless.

One of my DDs teethed without blinking an eye. The other had more problems. So yes it could be teething, but if you have any question or concern call your pedi. If he had a cold a couple of weeks ago he could still be getting over it or there could be residual fluid that might make his ears hurt.
