Teething cause fever over 100?

Does your DC run a fever when he is teething? We took Eli to the Pedi yesterday for a fever and his ears, chest, throat all looked ok. She chalked it up to teething but my Mommy Instinct is going off and I'm wondering if it could be something else. I know teething can cause a low grade fever but I just feel like it might not be the cause for his fever b/c he cut 2 teeth(bottom 2) a couple weeks ago with hardly any fussiness and no fever. I also don't see any new teeth getting ready to pop through.

    A little history:

Saturday he was clingy and wanted to be held and just acted like he had no energy but no fever. Sunday still clingy and blah acting. He started to feel warm to the touch that evening so I checked his temp and it was 99.9 which I know isn't too high for a baby but higher for his normal. Gave him some Tylenol for bed and he slept fine. Yesterday morning he felt really warm so I took a temp(ear) and it was 101.1. I then did the rectal and it was 100.4. Called the Pedi b/c he had been tugging at his ear some(really think that was from teething) and I'm mainly worried about his urinary/kidney history. He was born with a UPJ obstruction(blockage in his urinary tract) that he had to have repaired in October with surgery(hospitalized for a week). We knew about the UPJ before he was born and he took a low dose antibiotic since birth and luckily NEVER had any infections prior to surgery. Since his surgery in October he hasn't had any fever or infections so from what we know the surgery was a success but he will not be tested(VCUG) until March so we don't know for sure. I worry that he might have a UTI and wanted to Pedi to check and she agreed with his history. Went to Pedi and his temp was 100.7 after Tylenol but she didn't see anything in his ears, nose, throat and didn't feel like he needed a Urine sample check? She said to chalk it up to teething. She said if it goes above 102.5 to call back or if it stays around 100 range for more than 3 days call back.

Last night his temp was 102 and101.9. Gave him Motrin before bed he slept fine still felt really warm this morning and I took another rectal temp that was 102.1. Does this seem too high for teething? Also his eyes look so weak and tired(even after just waking) that I just don't feel like that would be teething?

I would call his Pedi Urologist but he is 4 hrs away [IMG] Sorry for the novel.

I am sorry to hear all this.

Just wanted to let you know that my office always says that teething usually does not generate fevers of over 101.

Good luck and hope he feels better soon!

Given his history, I'd insist on them taking his urine sample. Good luck, hope he feels better soon.

I think your instinct says it for you. That does sound like something. Whether it is a virus, or an infection, his fever is climbing rather than going away. I think I would take him back in.

My oldest DD had a 103 fever for 5 days. When I took her in they tried to figure everything out (took urine for a bladder infection, blood for other things, etc). That night her fever broke and out popped 4 teeth. So, teething can occassionally cause a high fever, but if it didn't before, trust your feelings.

Trust your instincts. You know something is wrong. I've never heard of teething causing a fever over 100* before!

If I were you I think I would take him back in and ask if the pedi will just put your mind at ease and run some lab work. It really isn't that big of a deal to do it (they can prick a finger to get a white blood cell count to see if there is an infection anywhere), and it seems like with his history that that would be the smart thing to do, especially since his temp seems to be going up and not down.

Good luck! I hope Eli (love that name BTW!!) feels better soon, and that it is just those teeth. Keep us posted!

    Thanks Ladies!

I called the Pedi office again and talked to the phone nurse. She checked his chart and the docs notes and said until it reaches 102.5 she didn't feel like it was an urgency [IMG] She recommended I keep giving him the Tylenol and luke warm baths if needed to cool him off. I called home to my sitter and she had checked it again at 12pm and it was 102 still. A friend suggested I go by the drug store and buy some of those UTI strips and after he has a pee pee diaper check it. I know that want be like a doctors office sterile test but I might get some idea if it's a UTI. Maybe it's just something viral that will go away?

My Mommy instincts are still telling me it's something more and if still at 102 tomorrow I am going to insist them look at him again. He just acts like he's drained of energy and I have a hard time believing it's teething?
