and he was up last night 5 times. He also is chewing rather that eating his formula and pretty cranky. The doc. said to give him a teething ring and hang in there and try to keep all other meds to a minimum. Fine with me, but, I do know some people use Orajel....do you recommend this and can Jack, 4.5mos. old use it?

Also, I can feel the bumps on his gums and see two actual full on teeth shapes through the front of his lower gum although I do not see any white coming through the tops of the bottom gum. Either his gums are the bumpiest this side of the Rockies (esp. when compared to DD's) or his teeth are coming in. Does that description of the seeing the full tooth shape through the front of the bottom gum make sense to anyone and does this seem like we may be close to it cutting through? Any other advice on making him more comfortable is welcome.

    Thanks,
    Amy

James loves it when I wet a face cloth and put it in the freezer. He chews on the frozen face cloth and it seems to help him.

Ditto! My boys won't take teething rings, but they'll suck on a cold washcloth.

My cousin used to freeze chunks of fruit & put them in one of those little mesh things. I can't remember what the age limit is, but there's also the teething tablets. I probably wouldn't use orajel that young......but you could ask your pedi about the teething tablets. They're natural, so maybe they're ok for younger ages? I don't know......mine didn't start teething till about 9 mos.

Hyland's Teething Tablets -- they're homeopathic, safe for most ages, and very effective.

    Amy,

Both of my girls (5.5 months old) have the exact same teeth shape bumps on their bottom gums. I could feel bumps on the top until about a week ago and now I can feel the sharp teeth edges below the gums, but can't see any white yet. One of my girls seems to be happy chewing on her fingers and the other stuffs a washcloth into her mouth and then yanks it out while biting down. This seems to really help her. We also just got wooden teething rings (they arrived in the mail today) and I hope those will be well received.

Good luck to you with the teeth!

The boys pedi said he didn't really think orajel and other topicals really did any good and he just recommended 8 mils of tylenol when they were cranky. He said it worked as well as anything. Other than that they chew on my fingers and chin. We have 6 and 4 teeth respectively now and the tylenol worked great for both.

I am not a big fan of meds of any kind, either for myself or my children. BUT, when a little is up uncharacteristicly during all hours of the night, he is HURTING. And when I am hurting I take Tylenol. You can't do it everynight, but if he needs some help occasionally it is okay. Read the ingredients of Hylands Teething Tablets and then decide which you would rather give your baby. I'm for Tylenol during those sleepless nights.

A frozen washcloth is great during the day.
