I always hear people say that part of teething is horrible, nasty, toxic diapers. Well, I don't remember it being a huge deal when they were getting their front teeth but somewhere around then they did have a stomach virus also. Well, now they are getting some of their back teeth and the diapers have been AWFUL the past few days. It's very loose, but I wouldn't say diarrhea and they haven't had a fever. They're eating/drinking just fine too. My sister's baby (12 months) is also getting these teeth and she said she is experiencing the same thing. What's the deal? How does getting teeth affect their poop? Maybe it's just that I'm new to this or I'm just missing something but I don't get it.
    Thanks for any insight!

I think it's because they drool alot when teething and they swallow more excess saliva then normal so it makes their poop a bit off. I am not sure if that is true or not. :pardon:

That could be it... I had heard that the excess drool can make them cough too, we usually have a little of that too.

That is what our Pedi told us as well!

I had no idea myself but Rachel's explanation makes perfect sense.

My Doc told me that in addition to swallowing so much *extra* spit, their saliva also becomes more acidic when they're teething to help break their solids down better so they don't have to chew as much while they have those sore teeth. So, thusly the fact that it smells worse than usual and is loose.

Our Ped also said the loose diapers are caused from increased saliva, even if we don't notice it outside their mouth. I hadn't heard about the acidity idea (that pp mentioned), but that sounds logical.

Both my boys get low grade temps, loose stools, & wicked diaper rash when they're teething. It's usually within a 5 day radius of the tooth erupting & is worse with bigger teeth (ie molars, top teeth, etc). Vaseline with every diaper change (once we notice it) is usually the ONLY thing that gets those poor bums through the icky teething diapers!!!!!
