I had no trouble with my teeth when I was pg with my daughter. With the twins I had a tooth practically crumble apart! I went in and had it fixed..with the novicain they give you without epinephram (spelling?) in it or whatever. And still felt them filling it! It was horrible. And now I just notice I have a cavity that wasn't there a couple days ago!! I'm so frustrated! I brush my teeth well.. I don't get it. The twins just have to be sucking all my calcium. I'm going to talk to the doctor about giving me more supplements other than what is in my prenatals. And for the cavity..I'm going to wait to have it filled after the twins are here. I want the good stuff!

mine is a gum problem. I was suppose to take some form for my ob to fill out on which meds the dentist could give me, but since I lost it, I felt a little ashamed to go and ask for another, so I will suffer until after the babies come....

Mine is more of a gum problem too. When I floss nowadays, I bleed all over! So gross. My teeth however, feel better. When I was pregnant with my daughter though, I had tooth pain and bleeding gums. Both got better after I delivered.

I just noticed this, too...but I hadn't connected it to my pregnancy! :) I am fairly sure I have a cavity but WILL NOT have anything done with it until I can have full on novacaine.... hopefully it continues to not be a huge pain...!!!

    Hi everyone,
Let me help answer some questions. I'm a dental hygienist and have been practicing for the last 13 years
    .
Unfortunately you may even have MORE cavities that the dentist doesn't even know about yet if he didn't take xrays at your filling apt. (we don't take xrays while preg if we don't have too).

Preg doesn't "TAKE" Calcuim from teeth that is just a myth. While we are preg the body is producing many more hormones ( which I'm sure you all knew already ;) Which in turn produces more plaque buildup than normal, which in turn will produce more cavities if we are not careful.
Our diets also change while preg. I Know that i'm up in the middle of the night having crackers, fruit, popsicles etc. and I eat almost every 2 hours while I'm awake. These eating habits don't give the mouth time to recover.
for every sip of something you take or carb you put in your mouth it takes the mouth 20 minutes to get out of an acid state.
How to help our teeth...... brush several times a day at least 2 minutes each time and floss at least twice a day. and if you have sugary drinks ... drink them quickly... this way they are not coating your teeth all day.... and use a fluoride rinse like Johnson and Johnson's ACT. ( it's safe during pregnancy)

for all you mom's out there with gum problems..... brush several times a day at least 2 minutes each time and floss at least twice a dayand keep flossing, have at least one cleaning during your pregnancy. ( i like to see pt's in their 4th or 5th month.) and be sure to brush your gums just as you do your teeth. ( they may bleed for up to 3 weeks but it will be less and less). All the baby books say that bleeding gums are normal but it really isn't. It's a sign of the disease gingivitis or maybe even Periodontal disease.

    Hope this helps,
    Jodi

I had issues with my teeth and gums with my first pregnancy. I didn't know there could be a connection between that and the pregnancy. I called my dentist, who was an older man, and the first thing he asked was "are you in a motherly way?" I thought it was the funniest thing ever!!!

Yes, you need to take care of your gums. Try to get an appt. to see a periodontist. they will do a deep cleaning and show you how to brush the proper way. I was surprised I wasn't brushing the correct way for most of my life until I went to periodontist about 8 years ago! It was life changing!

With my 1st pregnancy my teeth became a bit loose and they realigned to the point where my bite was off. I was constantly biting my cheeks and tongue! I was really worried that they were not going to go back to normal, but they got tight again after delivery and slowly went back to their original places. (Well, I'm glad not original, original; I had braces as a kid! They went back to pre-pregnancy original!!) I have been waiting for the BIG MOVE this whole second pregnancy, but nothing yet...hope it doesn't happen. I've heard that when whatever the "loosening hormone" kicks in to spread your hips etc. this is what can make this happen to your teeth!
