Teeth marks

So now, like little puppies, my two girls (one more than the other) are sliding their new bottom teeth along the "walls" of their cribs and essentially ruining them. I was putting one of my girls down to sleep when I noticed the teeth marks! When they stand up and cry (while I'm trying to get them to nap), I guess they rub their teeth on it. The thing I'm worried about is, aren't they swallowing it? I realize that it's probably not a lot, but it can't be good for them.

Is there anything I can put on it to stop them from ruining their cribs and possibly their teeth. And maybe even their health? They have the cribs that turn into toddler beds. We tried lowering the mattress, but it's actually given them even easier access to gnawing on the wood! Only my kids would be gnawing their cribs!!!!

I don't do CIO, but I let them cry for a while before I go in there to lay them down again and usually within 2 or 3 times (or 6 or 7  ) they fall asleep. Now I'm afraid to let them cry at all!

My oldest did that when he was little, and yes, he did more or less ruin his crib. We did not know how to get him to stop, he did it when he was waiting for us to get him out. He did not get sick though, so no worries there.

I'm guessing it feels good on their growing teeth. I can't remember ever hearing about something like this. Babies are coo-coo....

I also think it might be just a phase. If it doesn't stop though I would talk to my pedi about ways to stop the chewing. It might be bad for them down the line.

Mine chewed their cribs up pretty good. They were over the phase before they chewed completely through and they never got sick or anything. The chewing must have been soothing during teething time and I never knew when they were doing it because they were quiet. Once they were past the front 8 teeth, they stopped. I'm just glad we didn't buy expensive cribs counting on them to be big boy beds!

You can buy crib rail covers, some are hard plastic that snap onto most crib rails (first link below) and some are soft and pliable (second link). I think this is a pretty universal problem - I know both of my kids did it!

    Good luck!

What about chewing a high chair tray? Kelsey has two lower teeth partially in and in between us feeding her a bite and feeding Joshua a bite she will start chewing on her tray! We're hoping it's just a phase and that it just makes her teeth feel better ???

I think if I stand still next to them long enough, they'll chew on me! :D
