i have the play yard wrapped around their daybeds/cribs/whatever so they can only go from bed to bed and not get into their toys, etc. well, ivana can climb over the playyard, and i see that i've been beat here (head down in defeat). i definitely don't want her getting out of their room on her own... are there any tall gates i can get for the doorway? thanks!

Why not just close the door? If they can open it you could put one of those door handle protector thingies on it.

I don't know about tall gates but one of the things we did when we put DD in her toddler bed was install a latch lock outside of her room, so if she does figure out how to open the door, we can lock it from the outside (so far she has not attempted yet).

We use this at their door, http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2909941 They recently learned how to open the latch, but they are VERY adventursome boys. I'm not sure if most children would figure it out. I did notice on Babies R Us site that they have a gate that is 39" tall. I'm very tempted to try that one for myself. I didn't want to just latch their door. First off, they can work all the latches except the hotel latch on the front and back door, because they are too high. I want to be able to check on them while sleeping and the door opening wakes them. A gate was a better solution for us. We also use the same gate on the first step going upstairs. It makes it even taller.

I have this gate and I bought it because it was 36" tall. So far so good at 25 months.

thanks for the gate suggestions :) i do close their door, but they can open it, and we don't have actual door knobs, and i don't think they make covers for door handles.

They do make covers for door handles, you can get them at Babies R us or Toys R Us. I even think Target has them. But, I will tell you that my guys can work them. Here's a link: http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2792265

    LOL.

I have to tell you guys.. I just posted a thread about my sleep issues and how I want to reunite my 28 month olds now cuz I'm SCRE*ed w/ Nicolas busting down, climbing over and opening every gate in the world so I can actually help here.

We have BOTH of those gates!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The white one is an "EXTRA TALL" gate that I JUST bought at BRUS for $80 fricking dollars!! (it's nice and I like it) and is the one that he can unlatch, easy peasy AND climb over in 2 shakes of a lambs tail.. Not a prob. It is supposed to be the rolls royce but does CLEARLY state from 6 mos to 24 mos on it. I thought my kids were not cool enough to climb over. Cuz they just don't do stuff like that. LOL.

The other one is not tall AT ALL, we use it now at the top of our stairs and always have, it's a GREAT stairway gate cuz they CANNOT climb over it cuz there is nothing to hold onto cuz it's hooked onto poles but if it was on a doorway- forget about it-- in that case--can be climbed in a second.

I thought FOR SURE the white one was un scaleable. NOT THE CASE and my kids are NOT climbers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AT ALL.

They are VERY VERY smart tho, I will say that. They can figure out latches and locks just by looking at them once.

I actually took EXTRA measures w/ the white gate to make it EVEN tighter and I COULDN't even unlatch it so my husband h ad to and I had to LIFT Nicolas in and out and THE BOY COULD STILL DO IT!

    'Nuff said!

Anyway, we are reversing locks on their doors now cuz I am out of tricks!

    Hope that helps!

If someone invents something-- notify me!

Got them yesterday. My kids are WIGGING out over them. They are really quite brilliant! I hope I invent something like this very soon. So what did you do after your kids figured it out?? Reverse locks?? The only doors I NEED to have locked are theirs when they sleep.

Well, yesterday they didn't nap at all. My older son had a friend over so they were just too interested in trouble. I finally gave in and let them downstairs after 2 hrs of chasing them back in. But I also didn't let them nap when they got tired later. They had to stay up until bedtime.
I plan on getting another gate, a taller gate. But like you said I'll have to watch the latches. They can do the latch on the wooden gate, so if yours figured that white gate out I'll look for another type latch. I thought about putting in a split door like daycares have. But I'd rather not go to the expense if I don't have to. If your kiddies figured out the gate quickly, I wouldn't put it past them to figure out the door handle locks either. They don't even slow my kids down now. I'm going to put a eye hook latch on the pantry to keep them out of that, and maybe the basement door. The only other doors we have to watch are the bathrooms and their bedroom.
Nice to know their are alot of us with ingenious kids. :)

here is dream baby extra tall gate a gate we have. I think Walmart is cheapest, and usually they have the 97 cent shipping.

the gate is a swing gate, and is 39" tall... we love them. I can't answer about the kids learning how to open it, ours are only 21 months, but they are nice and tall. This set that fits 28-42.5" wide is only $57. good luck, these are reasons I don't want to give up cribs yet!

Maybel- that IS the same gate only it's in black. The one above is in white.

My kids ARE in cribs. LOL. They just get out.

And the type of latch thing is pretty much irrelevant here cuz they can climb anything, I guess. I was absolutely unaware of this until 2 days ago. I thought they were physically unable to climb up on anything cuz they just don't do that. Like, they need HELP into their chairs and onto the couch and stuff! Soo weird! I guess when they mean business tho--. Ha.

We finally just took the gates down and the door is open. We've just had to trust him. I realize he's 28 months old but i guess he needs that. Last nite was nite 2 of him sleeping in his bed alone and he DID IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    No gate, Door open. Unreal.

He came up ONCE last nite, I walked him down, told him if he did it again the door would have to be shut and he was out.

Kids are funny. I guess the gate just made him rebel or something. I don't know. *cuz I've never done that.. a- hem. LOL.

So, lesson learned for the moment. I'm trusting him and it's working.

Didn't mean to hijack DDdancers thread!! Sorry!!!!! Just happened to be a topic of extreme interest at this very moment! Ha.

Good luck w/ your gate issues :)

Another idea is to stack two gates in the door opening. Maybe get one of the extra tall gates and on top of that stack a tension type gate.

We have those door handles and for now they are ok with them. When I was reading the reviews at BRU a woman mentioned that her kids were able to figure them out and then her DH installed them upside down with the lock on top and it solved their problems. If I have to I'll try that since I already have them and would not want to spend extra $ on new ones.
