As you may have read in my other post Dh took Tyler to the ER this morning b/c he sounded more stuffy then he did yesterday. And after not finishing his bottle began to cough a bit. So i sent them on their way.

Just got a call a little while ago that Tyler tested positive for RSV.

I have been researching it ever since. But thought I would come here for stories from those of you that have dealt with this before.

If your baby had RSV please tell me about your experience. Tyler is so young I am very worried about him

    thanks so much

ETA: Not sure if they are sending him home or not yet. Also wondering what we can do to prevent Dylan and Brandon from getting sick. They just got over something and Im just getting over something too. I know RSV is VERY contagious and I dont want us to all be sick until the summer.

Also I have been doing ALOT of reading on Google and lots of things say that babies dont get this until 6 or so weeks old. B/c they have the moms antibodies? I ahve also been BF him so why on earth did he get this?

    Oh no, I'm sorry Nikki.

The youngest one of mine ever had it was 11 weeks, and it was not fun. Basically all you can do is keep them comfortable(elevating head, saline/bulb syringe, Tylenol). I think 3 of my kids were on breathing treatments for a few days with it.

The biggest concern in very young babies is making sure they stay hydrated, which is hard, because they don't want to drink when they are so congested. Keep an eye on his wet diapers, and call if you are concerned at all.

    Are they sending him home?

 I am so sorry! What a scary time. I ditto what Becky said...make sure he stays hydrated. And don't hesitate to call if you have any concerns at all!

As for the other two...if they are just getting over something, it could be that that's what they already had. Often in older children (even their age, especially if they have already been in contact with it at some point in their lives), it just presents as a cold. again, I'm sorry he has it already!!

Yes, absolutely! RSV is a cold virus, and is much less severe in older children.

We had it when the twins were 13w old - one week after starting daycare. It was rough and took some time for them to get better.

We were getting synagis shots to help their immunity against rsv and that may have helped them fight it. They were premies born going into the winter months.

They were co-rooming with us and we started sleeping them in their bouncy seats at the foot of our bed and we slept backwards with our heads near them. We ran a warm mist humidifier in the room and kept the bulb suction on hand using it often. We would also run hot showers and take them into the bathroom periodically throughout the day. I recall that if they were super stuffy and could not breathe to eat, I would do this and it would help open them up to eat.

I hope that your LO has a swift recovery. I agree that your older LOs likely already had it.

my girlfriends twins are just under 2 months - one got a cold and one turned into RSV. The other (her daughter) did not get it. Her son (who got the RSV) was hospitalized for 10 days- he had to g ofor 7 days without an "incident" before they would release him. Her son also had breathing issues when born and was in the NICU- her daughter had no issues and was not in the NICU. He is now home and doing great. I hope your little one comes home soon and your other precious little ones do not get it!

I've read both of your posts, and I have no experience w/ RSV but I was wondering if they are letting him come home.

I hope he gets better fast!

Ethen an Deven both had it at 2 weeks old. Deven was a code blue and was on a ventilator for 2 weeks. He was taken off and put back on. I posted our story here last Febrauary/March. I hope all turns out well for your babies. Feel free to PM if you want to. I do understand what its like. You guys did nothing wrong. The babies could have been exposed to it by a nurse/doc/cna or even housekeeper in the hospital, a friend or realitive in visiting or even their siblings.

I'm so sorry Nikki. Alyssa had this at 5 1/2 weeks old and she actually got it from me...go figure. She landed in the hospital for two days where they watched her o2 levels and gave her albuterol treatments around the clock every 4 hours. Since her O2 levels were good they sent her home...but she was still extremely sick. She had RSV and Bronchiolitis. Scary stuff i tell you. What we did was run the humidifier almost around the clock, salined her nose and suctioned quite frequently, layed her in her bouncer when she needed to sleep, and held her around the clock when she was awake. We also were set up with the nebulizer at home and we did breathing treatments of albuterol every 4 hours. One thing we found in regards to keeping everyone else not sick is a) don't share any drinks/ food / etc. b) Lysol kills RSV...spray it anywhere like doornobs, phone, etc c) be extremely dilligent about handwashing and don't allow anyone to touch him until they thoroughly washed their hands with disinfecting soap. She was really sick for a another week and a half and had that horrible cough another 3 weeks. Even with breastfeeding her...she still got sick. It's just a really nasty virus. Hopefully everything gets better soon. Good luck.

Ditto what everyone said. Push the fluids, and when my twins had it in January, my 2 yr old never got it. Good luck, and hang in there!

My boys had it at 2 months old - one was hospitalized because he wouldn't eat and when he did eat he threw it all up. The othe one continued eatins so he didn't have to be hospitalized. I stayed with Matthew in the hospital and he was there for 4 or 5 days - I can't even remember now even though it was only a year ago...

They have both recovered fine and had none of the issues they said they may have going forward.
