Well, I did fail my 1 hour and did my 3 hour yesterday. I am anticipating a call today telling me I failed the three hour.

I don't eat a lot of sugary things. My downfall is fruit juice (for the most part). For instance, today I had breakfast and a tall glass of OJ. My b'fast consisted of 1 serving of yoplait yogurt (the regular kind... the kind with sugar rather than aspartame), 1 serving of special K red berries, and fresh strawberries. I mix all that up and eat it in a bowl.

An hour later I checked my sugar and it was embarassingly high.

I did manage to buy some LIGHT OJ at the store yesterday and it has MUCH less sugar in it than the one I had been drinking.

I can stay away from candy - and can even change to whole grains for bread, etc. No problem. But will I have to stay away from fruit and yogurt? Cereal and milk? I eat healthy cereal.... and really, the only things that sound good to me are cheeseburgers, yogurt, cereal, fruit, veggies.

Tell me - educate me :)

Hmmm, I don't know the answer to you question as I am awaiting the results of my one hour. Good luck on your three hour though. :p

I've heard it's not unusual for twin mommies to fail the one-hour. I hope you get good news today! :)

it's not to bad. I still get to eat my cheerios which I love because they are whole grain. I was borderline so my doc had me doing the diet anyways. I can sneak in a sweet carb and it doesn't really bother my number. He told me the most important number is the fasting number first thing in the morning. As long as it is below 100 I'm doing well. You learn to test certain foods and see how they effect your blood sugar to see what you can and can't eat. I eat a lot of green veggies. I have fruit as a between meals snack. Good Luck!

My DD had GD when she was pg with the twins and did the diet.... the best news about it was that she really didn't gain a lot of weight while she was pg because she was watching what she ate... losing the post baby weight was easier!

Yes, I did fail. Even my fasting #s were high. She didn't say how high... but I am scheduled for a class on Wednesday and then will see her the following Wednesday.

I have to go cry about this for a while....

I was just going to comment that unless you are eating plain yogurt, there is a lot of sugar in those, too.

Fingers-crossed for good results on your 3-hour test!!!

ETA: You posted as I was typing...sorry to hear that you failed. Hopefully you will find things that you can eat that you still enjoy

I am so sorry to hear you failed. I had GD with my twin pregnancy too. Your class will give you good ideas on what you can eat but pretty much everything you just listed is probably going to be on the "no" list. You can eat fruit in small quantities..just not in the morning. Fruit juice is probably not going to be OK either unfortunately...

I drank water all the time..you can add lemon or lime to it to help if you want.

There is a good bread that I found so I could still eat my toast in the morning (I was addicted to toast when I was pregnant). It was from Silverhills Bakery and it doesn't contain any flour and is really high in fibre.
Here is their link to see if they have it in your area: http://www.silverhillsbakery.ca/

I would be happy to answer any questions you have. You will be fine...only a few more months to go.

I just don't know what I am going to do without cereal or cheeseburgers. Seriously. SERIOUSLY.

I am sorry you failed your 3 hour test. If you get a lower sugar cereal you should be ok, they also make special cereal not sure how good it is though. I would think you could still eat cheeseburgers, but don't know for sure. I hope you find some good alternatives. Hang in you are getting close now.

There are quite a few natural cereals you could eat w/5grams or less of sugar. They might taste a little bland to you. I really like Flax Plus cereal by Nature's Path. It is organic and you can probably find it in the organic section of your grocery store or Trader Joe's has it too and Whole Foods if you have one of those near you. It is low sugar, high fiber and it also has some omega 3's too. Barbara's bakery makes a cereal also in the organic/natural food section called Puffins and I think they are low in sugar too and pretty yummy. You might check some Kashi cereals too....just an idea:) Good Luck! Ezekiel bread is good as toast too if you can find it in your store it has a nutty taste and is really good w/PB!

You can probably still eat cheeseburgers once in awhile. You might not be able to eat it on white buns though...
Just depends on how your body does with white bread.

Well, I am going to be quite the whiney woman until I find out exactly what I can and can't eat. The info on the net is really confusing and I can't seem to get clear, concise answers. I really don't mind sticking to a diet and checking my blood sugar, but the biggest issue I have is that if my fasting blood sugar is high... is that a precursor to being insulin dependant during the rest of my pregnancy? It isn't like I am scarfing down sugar before I go to bed. I might have some peanut butter crackers, but even then, I usually eat that around 1030pm at the latest. The night before my 3 hour I didn't eat anything past about 9pm, and I drink LOTS of water during the night because the fan in my room to help keep me cool dries my mouth out :) So, my fasting was almost a 12 hour fast and it was high! :(

I've done well on diets in the past, but I counted calories and fat - not so much sugar. I already read labels before I buy foods... so that won't be hard. I guess the idea of doing a complete 180 is terrifying to me. I mean, I've eaten healthy foods (sans the cheeseburgers) and have only gained around 13 lbs so far in my pregnancy. That's what gets me. I know the yogurt I eat has sugar - but it's because it's that or aspartame and I was told to stay away from that. I eat Special K Red Berries - an actual serving at a time (not too much) and I thought THAT was okay. Heck, I thought even light OJ would be okay (I bought some low sugar stuff the other day). To think that all this stuff I thought I was doing well is going to turn out being stuff I can't have... well heck, I don't know what to do!

Like I said, I am whining and I know it. I need to get over it - and I know it. Dang it, I just want to whine for a while.

I was SO whiney when I found out I had GD too. I so feel ya!

The sugar is a problem but you also really need to watch the carbs...because that is what can make your #'s high. Your body turns carbs to sugar...so too many carbs by themselves are not good. They will want you to eat carbs with protein. You will have to see how your body reacts to all the foods again. It is a bit of a learning experience but you will have it down in no time. Your dietician (or doc..or whoever you are seeing) will give you your guidelines and you may have to play with them a bit. You have to make sure you are getting enough carbs but not too many carbs..it's a fine line sometimes. My dietician was great and told us everything in moderation. I was still allowed to have ice cream if I wanted but not a whole carton..just a small cup.

I am not too sure about your fasting level but once you get your diet under control it could make it better. Most crackers are not good on your levels because they are usually high in carbs and don't have much fiber. Some better crackers are triscuits, stone wheats and wheat thins...but again..only in small quantities. I always ate my toast with PB before bed and that kept me full usually until morning.

I think I threw away my hand out that I got from my dietician...but I'll take a look around and see if I still have it. It gave a bunch of serving suggestions and ideas on what to eat.

Thank you for the link. That made me feel somewhat better!

I've eaten less than 180g Carbs a day... when I was TTC, I put myself on a diet where I did log carbs (but not sugars) and did pretty good... I was eating a lot higher fat foods as opposed to carbs.

I didn't think I was really eating a lot of carbs during the day... my big problem is the morning. And because I wake up and take Synthroid (and iron every other day), I have to wait one hour after I take it before I can eat. So I have a cup of black coffee first thing (plain) and then when I eat it is usually something like yogurt, fruit, cereal, milk. And because I eat that so late in the morning (we get up late here at home so I eat Brunch more than anything else) I usually have a late-afternoon snack or lunch. I eat Lean Cuisines that are meat and veggies - not a lot of pasta at all. I was eating some beef lo-mein and teriyaki noodle packs (Lipton) for a while, but I burned myself out on them. I love to go out and get a cheese burger... in fact, I eat cheeseburgers once every three days. I don't order fries, but I do have my son's kid's meal fries. I don't mind getting rid of those from my diet. I don't eat sandwiches at home since I can't really have lunch meats... so I just don't know what the heck I am going to eat! I guess a lot more egg salad on whole grain bread?

As for dinner - we are really good. I don't cook pasta very often or rice - which was a huge part of our dinners pre-pregnancy. We usually have a beef-based meal with veggies. Half of my plate is normally a veggie. Last night I had a HUGE plate of steamed zucchini and squash left over from the previous night... I followed that with a peanut butter and banana sandwhich on wheat bread. Last night I had a green apple for a snack. But the night before we had meatloaf, which I ate probably 6-8 oz of meat - half a plate of steamed veggies, and a small portion of mashed potatoes (I know, that will have to go).

So, even though those carbs are in my diet, getting rid of them might help and that alone could work? I want to be hopeful and not whiney..... but ya know, it's no fun! Thanks for all the info, Pam!

As long as your numbers are kept pretty good and you are disciplined, I think a little sugar or extra carb here and there isn't so bad. The other thing people forget about when talking about GD is portion control.

One way you might be able to get some "juice" but not overdo it is to perhaps make your own spritzers using a bit of soda water with a splash of juice so that you get the juice flavor. (It's not going to be really, really sweet.)

My doc has me pricking my finger 1 hour after every meal plus the morning fast still even though my numbers are always 110 or below. (My fasting is usually 65 to 70.) I've been able to get away with eating a huge cheeseburger from Backyard Burgers, but if I even so much as sipped sweet iced tea, my numbers shoot up out of control!
