Symptoms of a nut allergy?

My girls tasted peanut butter this weekend for the first time at 13 months (DH didn't realize my waffles had peanut butter spread under the jam and gave them a few bites while I was out of the room). They seem to be fine. Does that mean they don't have a nut allergy? Or is peanut allergy something that can develop after the first few exposures?

    Thanks!

I don't know for sure, but I have heard this both ways. Mine had it at about 13 mos. and it's one of the only things they'll eat right now so I am SO grateful!!

I would ask your pedi (just call the office, someone will know!) and ask. I have heard that they can build an allergy, but I have also heard they will react the first time! At our 18 mo. appt. I asked because I was concerned that they might have a delayed reaction. She said "if it hasn't shown up by now, it won't!" (Of course you aren't there yet.

Most allergies do not occur with the first exposure. So, unless they were exposed at some point & you didn't know, they probably wouldn't have had a reaction the first time, or it could have been a very mild reaction. The reactions tend to get worse with each exposure. Although, I do have a friend whose daughter reacted the very first time she had peanut butter (of course, whose to say she might not have been exposed before & no one noticed? :pardon: ).

My little cousin ate Peanut Butter for 2 years before a sandwich almost killed him. Turns out he was deathly allergic. We were all so puzzled as we had seen him eat it so many times before.

Tyler has a life threatening peanut allergy and it was apparent the very first time he came in contact with it. I had peanut butter on my toast and he grabbed the crust, he didn't eat it, but rubbed it on his face. His whole face blew up like a balloon! I would assume if your child has eaten peanut butter and had no reaction that it is fine but check with your pedi.

[SIZE=10pt]We had a reaction today. We're pretty sure it was from peanut butter ~ but also could have been from shots too.

We went in for our One year WBV and they both got a shot in each arm and blood drawn for their iron count. Both healthy and growing. Did as well as can be expected with being poked three times ;)

Got home and gave them a snack before nap time. I made toast and DH was having a PB sandwich. We put a small amount of PB on the toast and gave it to them. They had PB cookies a couple of weeks ago and didn't have a reaction so thought a lil PB would be fine. They ate the toast fine...they both started getting fussy as it was naptime. I noticed that DD had a red patch on her forehead, but didn't think anything of it as the was rubbing her eyes and head (from being tired). We put them to bed and DD didn't fall asleep and continued crying for 5 minutes (not like her) DH went in and got her and her face was bright red and she had small red blotches on the back of her head and left forearm.

We went back to the doctor and they said that it was most likely from the PB  Of course now I feel like the worst parent in the world :( PEDI said that kids under 2 don't really need PB as there isn't any nutritional value from it that they can't get elsewhere. Also that there are more and more kids that are allergic to nuts at an early age. He did say that quite a few kids outgrow the allergy. Luckily DD appears to have just a topical reaction to it. Her breathing was great, her tongue was fine and she was acting completely normal ~ just didn't look so great

BTW: PEDI did also say that some kids don't react the first time they have something, that it quite frequently happens the 2nd or 3rd time.

    April :)
