Our doctor told us a recent visit that he was researching and reading studies about switching kids off whole milk sooner than they normally recommend (which I think is at least 2 years old). Then I was reading an article that mentioned switching kids off whole milk at around 18 months if there was any family history of obesity and/or high cholesterol. My DS loves his milk and drinks a lot of it. I was wondering if I should switch to 2% or not. Our doctor said he thinks this will become the new recommendation soon, but is not yet. So, I'm not sure. I want to make sure they have what they need to grow properly.

Has anyone switched? It would be nice not to have to buy two different types of milk (my DH and I don't drink whole milk).

    Thanks!

for me if I KNEW my kids were for sure getting enough fats, protein and calcium from table foods I'd consider it, especially since my kids are HUMONGOUS children! LOL!
But do some research because I read something recently that said anything less than 2% actually prevents teh calcium fromabsorbing, or soemthing. I read it before Christmas and need to look at it again!

We switched from formula to whole milk when our girls were 11 months old. At our 1 year checkup, our ped told us to switch to 2%. Our girls were rather large :)

We switched when they turned 2. DH's family does have high cholesterol, but no history of actual heart disease. Our ped said he wasn't worried about it. We could have switched sooner, but I liked having whole milk in the house for my coffee.

we're still on whole milk at nearly 3 because my kids are in the 3rd % for weight (DD isn't even 25 lbs yet)...we do have history of high cholesterol in my family but the pedi feels the risks outweigh the negatives...I'm sure he'll recommend 2% at 3 but for now we're still doing whole...

neither DH or I drink milk and if I have to cook with it I just use the whole milk - not really that big of a deal...
