I started giving the babies whole milk as I dropped nursing sessions, we're down to just the bedtime feeding, but I was wondering when I should start thinking about 2% milk. The rest of us drink skim, but I know babies need the extra fat. (Or do they really? ) Should I eventually step to 2%, then 1% then skim... or just one day start skim? Am I completely overthinking it?
Thanks in advance for your opinions!

    Helen,

As far as I know they say to have the kiddos on whole milk until age 2. They really do need the extra fat for brain/nerve development.

As far as how to step it down, that I can't answer for you. I actually still drink whole milk (when I drink it)! And we use whole milk for all cooking too.

My pedi said whole milk until age 2, they need the fat for brain development. At two, he had us switch them to skim milk.

We were told for them to drink whole milk until age 2. At 2 we got the go ahead to switch to 2%. We switched my oldest DD to 1% around age 4. We drink 1% here and the twins 2%.

We are told whole milk to age 2. Then at the 2 year appoinment, I was told to switch to fat free. Then at the 2 1/2 year check up I was told again to switch to fat free (different doc in the same practice)
    We all drink 1% here.

Same as the others ... we were told whole milk until age 2 ... then you can do whatever you want.

We were told whole milk until 2, and once they turned 2, we were told anything was fine except for skim. For the most part the boys drink 2% now, but we gave them whole milk until about 3. We drink 1%, and sometimes the boys will drink that.

I was told age two but with girls who have always been in the 95th percentile for weight and smart as a whip, I knew I wasn't hurting them by making the switch a little early. I think we switched them over at about 20 months. The ped even told us at their 2 yr check up that we could put them on skim milk if we wanted since that's what dh and I drink but we decided to keep them on the 2% for a little longer.

We also switched at age 2. I gave them 2% for a few weeks before going to 1% like the rest of us drink.

Our pedi's latest research recommends we keep 'em on whole milk until they are 3! for brain development etc.

Whole until two, now usually two percent. Although at this point they all drink whatever is on hand.
