Switching from sleep sack to regular blanket

My two are almost 1...thus far, they've been very comfortable in short PJ's or a onesie, plus fleece sleep sack.

But they're now starting to stand in their cribs, and they're getting tangled and irritated with the sacks. It's now too warm for fleece as well.

I'm debating buying the thin knit sacks -- but, that doesn't solve the getting tangled issue. When did your kids move to regular blankets? I can't imagine mine staying under one just yet, because they're all over the place. But, I also can't really use one-piece footie sleepers, because they're both very long-torsoed, and nothing fits right.

Last night they slept in just shortie PJ's, and they're still sleeping, so I guess they weren't too cold.

What to do? When did your kiddos start sleeping with regular blankets?

Good question! We're still in sleep sacks (knit ones now, since it's warming up). I can't see moving to blankets anytime soon, because there's no way they'd stay covered. They also have strong associations of sleep sacks with nap/bedtime - as soon as DD sees hers, she starts her self-soothing routine (thumb in mouth, fingering earlobe with other hand). They don't get tangled up in them too much, and manage to sit/stand in their cribs just fine even in sleep sacks (darn it <_< ).

I wonder if the "big kid" sleep sacks would work well for your twins - they look just like regular sleep sacks, but have little foot holes at the bottom. Maybe that would help with the tangling issue. I think they start at 2T (but that might be ok, since your kids are giants!).

My girls are almost 23 months and we're still in sleep sacks. We've used them for so long because 1) they toss and turn so much they'd never stay under a blanket, 2) they don't seem to like blankets, and 3) we thought it would keep them from climbing out of their cribs. We've never really had problems with them getting tangled in them and they can walk around their cribs in them just fine. I'd planned to used sleep sacks at least until the girls moved into real beds (for reason #3), but we just figured out this weekend that they actually still can climb out of the cribs. They are also starting to fight us more and more about putting on the sleep sacks. We may have to discontinue use sonner than I'd planned, but I think you can certainly keep using the sacks for quite a while. I think your kids will soon figure out how to move around in them. Just get the lighter weight ones, as you mentioned.

We use the big kid sleep sacks. I put them over short sleeves and shorts pj's on warm days and when it gets really hot, we'll go to cotton sleepers with no sack. I started using the big kid sacks very early and they were a tripping issue until 34" height. I wrote to Halo suggesting they offer a 1-2T size for kids who walk before they reach 34" and they responded saying it was coming. I just checked their site and they do have them here.

My boys know how to cover themselves up but they wriggle around so much in their sleep that I think they sleep better in a sleep sack and we also use it as part of the sleep routine (for both naps and bed).

ETA: Halo has a twins discount so be sure if you call to ask for it.

I was going to suggest the big kid sleep sacks too. Amy & Sarah are 2.5 and we're still in the regular ones! They seem to be able to walk (even sort of run) in them just fine, and don't mind them (it's an essential part of our bedtime routine), so we're sticking with them for as long as they fit.

OH, and I also told them in my letter that they should have the big kid's sack in a lighter fabric for Summer and their site says that's coming in July. I must not be the only one writing to them.

we ended the sleep sacks as soon as they could stand up and cruise the crib (well before 1 year)...didn't want them to trip and fall into the spindles on the crib and hurt themselves. We just dress them wamer at night if I think the temp will drop.

We never really used sleep sacks ... we just always put them in their beds with just their pjs on. Right after their first birthday we started giving them a blanket in the crib ... they LOVE them ... they wrap themselves up in them and laugh. Not really what I was going for though ...

We usually go in and check on them before we go to bed, and if the blanket isn't on them (which it pretty much NEVER is) we cover them with it ...

That being said, they are never cold in the morning ...

We stopped at 1....they somehow broke the zipper and we just never got another one. We just use a blanket now. It doesn't stay on them all night (due to tossing and turning) , but we don't dress them in shorts.......we make sure they have long pj pants, short sleeved shirt and socks to keep those tootsies warm! They sleep all night! :)

I changed my oldest at age 2, just after she went to a big bed (at 1y10m) and she got used to the blankets. She was also getting too large for the sleep sacks. I had European ones up to 110 cm (43") but obviously the did shrink and ran smaller because she was 43" just a month ago.

I moved my kids over to the zipper footed sleepers instead of the sleep sacks when they are around 8-9 months old. They can stand in them and still stay warm enough...they have some that are fleece and they have others that are a lighter weight cloth so it's cooler... in the heat of the summer it all depended on whether or not we had the window units on... most of the time I'd cool down their room b/c they slept better if it was cool and they were more bundled up. But on those in between days we probably had a few nights where they just slept in onesies...

    SWEET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D

To the OP- yeah, if I want them to stay covered, it's the sacks. I do put a blanket in there occasionally, but it's more of a "blankie" than a cover.

Thanks, guys! Those big-kid sacks sound perfect. I think I might see if we can make it with our fleece sacks until July, and then get the lighter-weight big-kid sacks when they come out. Last night I tried putting them to bed again without any sacks, and it was a disaster. So, clearly we need something...

    Thanks again!

I think maybe after this summer. We are addicted to the sleep sacks. We had the fleece ones for the winter and we are using the light cotton ones now. We have them in the largest size we could find (XL) and they do fine with them. They have much more room to move around in them and rarely ever get tangled. They can even walk in them now. It's pretty funny to watch. I could possibly get away with a blanket with Arwen who tends to stay a little more still during the night than Lorien but Lorien would just kick it right off since she moves so much and I worry that she would be too cold. Even during the summer, it gets a little cool because of the central air. I love the sleep sacks and wish they could use them forever!
