When did you move your kids from their infant carseats to the next one that allows them to sit up, but still face backwards?

My DS is getting so heavy in his carseat and his little feet are hanging over. I just don't know when I should switch him. He loves looking out the windows and has gotten to where he hates being put in the thing now that he knows how to sit up and he can't in the infant one.
    Any advice?
    How old were they?
Did you wait until they met the weight requirements?

    Thanks,
    Carol

Mine were almost 8 months...I switched when my little guy's feet would hang over, too. (And, when my back broke from lifting them!! lol)

I would switch them - it will make it easier for you!!!

We switched around 7 months. I had already stopped taking the infant seats out of the car and would just bring the kiddos in and out of the house without the seats. I figured we might as well change the seats. They seem to love the new seats and I think they get a better view out the window.

I really pushed it, my guys were still in theirs at 10 months, LOL Then I made the switch. I hated to get rid of the carriers they were soooooo convienent.

My twins were almost 11 months when I switched them. It was really only because of Nolan's weight. I think Meghan was still under the weight limit at 2 years old :).

We moved ours into the convertible carseats at 7 months and 1 week. Mine love their big, cozy carseats.

I guess I was really early our weight restriction was 22lbs and at our 6mo appt my DS was already at 20lbs so we made the decision to buy the next ones and put em in the car so they were basically 6mo's when we switched them to the next car seats.

Ours went to 20 lbs or 26 inches (gosh, I think that is what it was for our Graco sungrides). Well DS hit both those milestones at 4 1/2 months. So we switched then. He was (and still is) a big boy!

We did 8.5 months and I have to say my girls LOVE them!! I get a kick out of them craning their necks to look at and laugh at each other!!

Mine were too long and too hard to carry at about 6 months, so we switched then. They were also pushing the weight limit, so we switched them out.

We just switched them on their birthday yesterday. We really stretched it, but they rode fine in the infant seat. We stopped taking the carseats out of the van weeks ago though.

We switched just after 6 months. I couldn't do it anymore, way too heavy (18lbs+ each). And although convertibles have new challenges (getting them in and out of the car), I like it and I think they like it too.

When ours reached 20 lbs at the 10 month mark we switched the car seats.

I switched mine at 10 months. They hadn't reached the height or weight limit, but they were just too heavy to lift in the carrier anymore for me and their nanny. In fact, they still haven't reached the weight limits, but are a couple inches past the height limit now.

With my oldest, we switched at 10 months. With these twins, they'll probably last a full year, tiny things that they are!

6 or 7 months. They were super heavy for me to carry.

My twins were switched out of the infant carseat when they turned 1.....they were still able to fit in it by both height and weight (not by much), so we kept them in them.....when they turned a year, we switched them to forward facing seats.

Sophie is still in hers!! I heard that it is safer keeping them in a carrier untill they are 20lbs. She is getting there so we are going to change it over in the next couple of weeks x

    Thanks for all your responses.
I switched DS to his new seat and he loves it! He looks out the window the whole time he is in the car.

My only problem is now when he falls asleep, his poor little head hangs down. Is there anyway to prevent this? I tried putting rolled up blankets so his head would stay, but if I am driving, I can't fix his head.

DD is still a little small, so she is in her infant carrier. I will probably switch her in month or so.

I have been thinking about this myself, my girls are 6 months and haven't reached the height or weight limit yet, BUT a friend of mine with a slightly older child saw them in their seats and said that their legs were too long and that I should change them. I haven't checked to see if it is true, but her explanation sounded reasonable: in a rear-facing seat, if the legs extend beyond the infant seat and touch the backs of the seat in the car, if you are in a crash, the babies will absorb the impact through their legs and bodies if their feet are pushed up against the backs of the car's seat. So I am looking for new seats this week.

DS was getting pretty heavy to carry around, so I switched them both over at 8 months. I definitely utilized the stroller a lot more after that!
