Switched to Alimentum

We're on Day 3 of our switch onto Alimentum for one of our guys. It's a struggle to get him to eat it, so all I do is try to feed him. (Getting better, and I can't blame him. It smells so bad!) It's lower cal than he's used to also (pedi doesn't want to inflict 24 cal alimentum on the poor kid if we can get by with 22 cal), so he's always hungry.

But anyways. I knew that his poop would change. He used to go once a day, really more like every 36 hours. Kind of loose and watery, but that was to be expected on 24 cal formula.

On the alimentum he's going something like 5-6 times per day. Really stinky (offensively so), loose but not too watery, and huge quantities. Is this normal for alimentum? (I know, every baby is different.) It's getting frustrating - it seems like he's ALWAYS stinky. And always uncomfortable from it. We'll get used to it, I'm sure ... just didn't know if this was a common reaction to the alimentum.

    Thanks.

Yes, DD was like that in the beginning too and then it got better. They just need time to adjust to it. I don't remember how long but I don't think it was too much. Yes, that formula smells so nasty, my pedi asked if I tasted it...NO WAY I can't stand the smell let alone taste it.

OH and DD hated it in the beginning too but eventually got used to it. She is now not liking it much but drinks regardless.

One of mine is on it and the poops are always watery and messy.. It has actually been bad enough that I threw away a brand new sleeper cause I didn't want to mess with it.

So glad I came upon this post. My daughter normally poops once a day as well until last Monday she started pooping alot and on Wednesday had gone 13 times in 2 1/2 days. Her poor bottom was bright red and very sore looking despite using diaper cream and A&D oint. So I took her to the dr. (she also would scream out in pain while pooping and it was mucousy) and she switched her to Alimentum due to a milk intolerance. Well her pooping let us some but she is still going 3-5 times a day and I can't get her bottom healed because of it. She has 4 bright red, slightly open areas. So I guess it is normal to poop alot on this stuff. My 17 mo. old son was on Nutramigen and I don't recall him pooping so much but maybe he did. I have heard that some people use Alimentum and Nutramigen when one runs out. The town I live in has cans for $6 when they have a small dent in them at Drugtown, they frequently have Nutramigen so I am going to check with the dr. about using both and it o.k. stock up. Good luck!

I am confused, is Alimentum less calories per ounce that other formulas? We were on Similac advance then Sensitive.

The boys were also like that in the beginning. Give their systems some time to adjust. They went from 3-4x/day on alimentum to just 1-2.

    HTH!

Sorry for the confusion - we concentrate the formula up to higher caloric values. Mixed to package instructions all except preemie formulas (Enfacare and Neosure) are 20 cal - including Alimentum. Preemies are 22 cal. And we were up to 24 cal because he couldn't gain weight on just 22 cals per oz - but when we switched over to the Alimentum the pediatrician thought that a 24 cal concentrate would be too much and we'd really struggle with his eating. But we're calling tomorrow to see if we can try him on it anyways - the 22 just isn't enough for him and he's spending ALL of his waking hours eating.

Glad to hear I'm not the only one dealing with the crazy pooping. I hope it is just temporary and evens out a bit - between the cost of the formula and the extra diapers we're flying through, this switch is gonna break the bank!

Yes, that is what happened to one of my DS's on that stuff. I think it smells like nasty Cheez-Its! I swore I would never eat them again, but guess who loves them...the one who sucked down the Alimentum!
