No one has yet to mention what are we going to do about protecting our babies who are younger than 6 months of age from this virus thats spreading rapidly!

    From cdc.gov:
    QUOTE
Research has shown that children less than 5 years of age are at high risk of serious flu-related complications. It’s estimated that more than 20,000 children less than 5 years old are hospitalized due to flu each year in the U.S. Many more have to go to a doctor, an urgent care center, or the emergency room because of flu.

    Whole article.

I think all you can do is limit contact with strangers and keep hand washing at a maximum. I would do all the same precautions I did for RSV.

I agree. :good: I wouldn't stop doing all the things you normally do with your babies. Just make sure to wash your hands often!

    I also agree.

Mrs. Ortiz, there is no vaccine as of yet, for this strain of the flu. However the CDC is saying that those who have been immunized against the flu year after year might have formed some natural immunity towards it. Of course this doesn't help the youngest of our population and one of the most at risk.

I am especially worried as I teach in CA. The majority of my students are mexican-american who visit mexico often as do their families. I plan on sanitizing all of the desks and other things in the room tomorrow as well as have them sanitize when they enter the door. Do you all think that is too much or not enough?

I don't think that's too much to ask. I would probably sanitize the desks every day too.

I am too starting to worry a little. There are 6 confirmed cases in Texas 3 of which are in San Antonio which isn't that far from Houston.
The officials here in Houston said it is most likely going to come here. We have already had calls and emails from the school district about what steps they are taking and how they are handling it.

And yes as PP said it is a new strain of flu they do not have a vaccine at this time.

Here is a link to the past influenza pandemics. Interesting stuff, and a little scary!

I just got a 5-page circular from my daughters' preschool about disinfecting mats when entering school and class rooms, cleaning toys, putting away fabric toys, pillow and carpets, extra wipes, bleach solutions, and all other extra precautions taken, etc. From Monday onwards every child will get a chart and I have to take their temps in the morning, write them down and sign them off. Otherwise they can't come. Fever, no go.

Also the elevator in our building now has an extra plastic cover over the buttons and will be cleaned every few hours (instead of daily).

The entire country is moving into fast mode here, very well prepared but SARS is still in the memories of millions of people here.

Oh that's awful. :( I just put together a sticky at the top of the forum with links to the CDC and WHO that might be helpful.
