Swapping twin A for B

I was looking through my early ultrasound pictures sorting them out to make a scrap book and it appears that in one u/s at 10w 4days that twin A has the placenta forming anteriorly, then the next ultrasound at 13 weeks the notes say twin B has an anterior placenta. The other placenta is posterior so that is not where the confusion lies. They have just swapped them, accidently.

It's annoyed me now, I know it doesn't matter too much, but I will have to say 'No, honey, that's not you, you were twin A back then'........so I am a bit annoyed. lol. Feel like making them change it back.

I'm just wondering if this has happened to anyone else that they know of?

    thanks for listening.

twin A and twin B designations can change up until birth unfortunately... it probably wasn't a mistake by the u/s tech... your twin B probably began to be presenting first and became twin A.... that's the explanation I would have. Next time you go in for an u/s ask what the placenta looks like for the "presenting twin"...just to see if maybe your twins really did switch positions. I've even heard of babies who have switched positions up until birth...where Baby B actually comes out first and therefore is called twin A. An episode of it even occurs in the bible when Tamar, who conceived twins by Judah, had her babies..her twin A reached out his hand, they tied a string around it, then he pulled back his hand..and then the first baby came out with no string... it was the second baby that had the string on his hand... so even during active labor they can switch positions! LOL! I was glad I had b/g twins so there was never any confusion no matter what they were labelled.

My girls switched sometime about 6 weeks before they were born. The u/s techs kept their original designations as A (Joey) and B (Olivia), it was easy to tell who was who based on amniotic fluid levels. When they were born, however, Olivia was A due to being born first and Joey was B. I was confused for awhile with the A/B labels, but we named them after they had switched, so we knew it was Olivia who was born first.

My boy was always twin B, and they told me that it wouldn't change even if they swapped positions. But, I think that if it were two of the same sex, they would have gone with A being the presenting twin.

My boys switched too. One u/s tech showed me how to tell the difference (since we've had names for them since 19 weeks). Mine share a placenta so it's even harder to tell the difference, but I was told that baby b is closer to my skin/fat while baby a has a lot of placenta around it. They have been continuing to call them baby a and b according to this because one baby had IUGR and they are monitoring him for a study (even though he's now the same size as his brother). Baby b will probably be born first, but we know his name is Ryan no matter what baby they call him at the hospital. ;)

yeah ive heard they can change twin A or B..depends on who is closest to the cervix either during u.s or whomever is born first...

Sorry your frustrated...at least you know, so you can at least write the info on the back..lol

Both my OB and the U/S Tech told me that baby A was the one closest to the cervix at that moment, B the baby that was furthest away, and that they can change at anytime during pregnancy. So, I don't think it was an accident by the tech -- it's just the way it works.

    Ditto

My peri said the exact same thing and with us having twin girls, no way to know who is who really. At the 3rd u/s we could tell which was which since the size was different (our baby B was smaller at the first & second u/s) The latest u/s they are the exact same size so we really can't say that Baby B has been Baby B all along.

I was so confused by this too, I was under the impression that A stayed A and B stayed B. However, my girls changed often and we only knew this because one had a 2 vessel cord. So it made it diffcult with naming. We decided to name which ever was born first Amelia (although she was baby B most of my pregnancy).

I've been wondering about this too. I've only had two ultrasounds so far, but my husband thinks they switched A and B with the second ultrasound. Here are the pictures if anyone cares to look.

This was the first ultrasound at the RE's office at 6w5d:

This was the second ultrasound at the OB's office at 9w1d:

Maybe I don't know how to read ultrasounds. Are the images mirrored of actual or upside down or something? The RE's office had Baby A at the top and Baby B down below. Is my cervix closest to the narrow part of the picture or the wide part? I'm so confused. None of this makes sense to me. Can someone straighten me out?

My baby a was brandon for the longest time he was on the left side of my belly
baby b was Dylan and he was on the right...

I had their names picked out for what side they were on , they kept asking me at time of delivery what baby a's name was going to be but baby a was now baby b to them... UGH

I told them the one of the right was dylan... he was always bigger and the now baby b was Brandon...

I to get mad when I see the U/S and I have to go back and figure out weights to see whos who.....

This did happen to me, between 19 -21 wks. At 19 wks our u/s tech said baby a was a boy and baby b was a girl. At our 21 wk visit with a different u/s tech it was opposite and then I looked at the previous u/s pics and figured out that they did indeed swap positions. Since then she has placed her head in my cervix and hasn't moved a bit, and he flipps up, down and everywhich way. Only when he flips breech does he piss his sisiter off and she kicks him in the head till he flips again (she already ruling the roust, thata girl).

From all the u/s I had the bigger part of the picture is where you cervix would be. I have had many vaginal u/s in my pregnancies and the area about where your cervix is will funnel and be black if you are funneling. I have a cerclage and the area above it is white (no funneling) and then there is a white line which is the stitch keeping my cervix closed.

I could see how twins in the same sac could switch around, but is it even possible for twins with separate placentas and sacs to just switch? They are anchored by their placentas, so it doesn't make sense to me that di/di twins could ever change places...

I don't believe my A and B will change because A's placenta is over my cervix and therefore B just can't get close to the cervix.
