My twin boys are almost six weeks old and I have never really swaddled them but wonder if this would help their sleeping. I guess I have hesitated to swaddle them because I have been afraid of using a blanket to swaddle (the whole SIDS thing!) and/or I don't have a good swaddle blanket.

    So my questions are...

    1) Do you use a regular blanket to swaddle? - like a receiving blanket?

    2) If you use an actual swaddle blanket what are your favorite brands? Are there particular ones good for cooler nights? I live in Pennsylvania and the nights are starting to get cool here.

    Thanks!

we used regular flannel receiving blankets, the ones from Babies R Us (Koala Baby) are actually longer (make sure to fold length-wise) and worked much better than the others we had. We bough the kiddopotamus swaddle me's but first they were too big my little DD, and then they seemed way too warm (polar fleece) but that's just our summer here, in the hundred teens....they're stashed somewhere at the bottom of the blanket drawer now....maybe we'll break them out when it gets cooler...

I used a regular receiving blanket, and stopped when they started fighting against them and breaking out.

As long as they don't break out of the swaddle, they're safe. Mine didn't start breaking out until at least 3 mo, so you're good!

Swaddling is a HUGE help in soothing them to sleep and helping them stay asleep. The tightness helps replicate the feeling of the womb, and also prevents themselves from startling themselves awake with the Moro reflex. I don't know why anyone doesn't do it.

As far as blankets, I just used receiving blankets. The bigger the better. Square is easier than rectangular. For cooler nights, I'd just dress them more warmly under the blanket.

Ditto. Thermal one in the summer & flannel (homemade) one in the winter.

I use the miracle blanket. It was brought to my attention by the other ladies on this forum. My babies are/always have been extremely active in their sleep and this blanket has really help to soothe them and keep them from waking themselves up. You can google it and you will find it online. I think they were each $50 but worth every penny to me. The only problem I am having now is trying to break them of it.

I love our Miracle Blankets! They really help with the sleeping for us. We bought ours off the website and I think they were more like $30 each. You can also check ebay for them. Some people see used ones there.

Miracle blanket all the way! My girls are just transitioning out of them at six months; i'm now 'half swaddling' them. It made a HUGE difference; we did it at first and then stopped for some reason, then went back to it.

As pp said, it replicates the feeling of the womb, helps them feel like they're being held and keeps them from swatting themselves awake.

I figure the $$ we spent was worth every second of extra sleep i got (and trust me, i still need it!)

however, also agree that if you go w/receiving blankets, you need big ones and square is much better than rectangular.

We used regular recieving blankets and then the "kiddopatums Swaddle Me" blankets.
I LOVED swaddling. It helped so much. We just quit at 5 1/2 months!!
