Surprise! Guess who's here early?

So, Sunday night DH had a bunch of buddies over to watch the Sopranos series finale. I was upstairs, putting Nadia to bed around 8:30pm, when I felt sort of a gush.....my first thought was, great, I have lost all bladder control at 35 weeks, LOL.

Turned out to be blood, though -- lots and lots of blood, which obviously wasn't good. DH had to pause the TV show, and tell his friends, "Uh, guys? We're going to the hospital. You guys stay here and enjoy."

You can just imagine the scene....anyway. It worked out well, because we left, and my best friend got there to sit with Nadia -- DH's friends were there in the interim.

At the hospital, the babies looked fine on u/s, and their heartrates weren't distressed....and both placentas also looked okay. But, when they did an internal check, I was dialated to 6 cm (no contractions), and the OB could feel a bit of placenta behind a baby's head. NOT good -- it was likely placental abruption. And, I had been pretty much gushing blood all this time.

So, they decided to do a C-section right away -- I could have opted to labor, but was strongly advised against it. And, DH and I agreed after hesitating for about one second.

It was good that everything happened so fast, because I was so petrified of having a section -- I didn't really have a chance to think about it. None of it was fun, mind you -- just lots of weird sensations and bright lights and a very clinical quality.....but, I didn't have any nausea at all, which I was worried about.

Anyhow. Around 1 am, they delivered my tiny baby girl first -- Karina Mai -- who was 4 pounds, 10 ounces. (I guess the u/s estimates were way off!) Her middle name means "middle sister" in Marathi, and is a tribute to a cousin of mine that died in a car accident five years ago.

Kevan Robert (named after DH's dad) came soon after at 5 pounds, 9 ounces -- we were surprised that he was almost a pound more than she was. Actually, that might have been problematic during a vaginal delivery of twins anyway....

I remember lying there thinking their first cries sounded exactly like little sheep, LOL.

They are both tiny and perfect -- I will try to get pics up asap. They were both breathing room air from the start.....yesterday morning, their breathing was a little fast, but that has resolved with both, and they've been moved to a regular preemie nursery instead of the NICU. Both are doing just great.

I was a little put out with the lactation folks at this hospital, because I thought I'd be pumping right away -- but the LC just last night brought me a pump and got me set up. The kiddos are doing okay with taking a little formula -- I think Karina is taking 6 CC's and Kevan is taking 8 CC's. The NICU was pleased with that, and told me they're both doing wonderfully for their gestational age....

I sent DH home at about 4 am, and my own recovery has been, eh. It's no picnic, and worlds harder than a vaginal delivery -- but I'm doing a little better now that I've been up and around a bit. All the advice I read here has been very helpful! They removed the epidural and PCA pump last night, and I'm now on Percoset and Motrin instead.

The hardest thing is being separated from my munchkins -- I'm about to go over and see them in the preemie nusery. The neonatologist thought they might get too tired out from trying to breastfeed this early -- but we'll play it by ear tomorrow.

Let me try to upload some pics!

Congrats on the birth of your babies!!! I know first hand how hard it is to be separated from your babies while they are in the NICU. Just visit them and call often, that is what I did. Can't wait to see pictures.
