On Sam & Syd's 2nd bday, we went out to dinner. Getting ready to leave, Sydney fell. She had a blue crayon in her hand, she fell and it impaled her just below her eye. It was deep. I washed it out, we rushed her to an ER clinic. I had them clean it twice and glue it.

As it healed.... there was still BLUE. At first, I thought just the bruise. But months later, still blue. We consulted Derm and Plastic Surgeon. I personally was of the "wait and see" approach, whereas DH wanted it removed ASAP.

Well, we have to switch from a PPO to an HMO for next calendar year (huge rate hikes in our health insurance), so since the Plastic Surgeon wasn't on the HMO (and is on the PPO), we decided to get the surgery this year.

Okay, so I was reluctant..... but ultimately let my DH lead the way on it.

Today Sydney did great to start. Very brave and well behaved. The Dr gave her a med that was supposed to make her sleepy (didn't work). So she wasn't thrilled being carried off into the OR. After the surgeon came to talk to us. Turns out she had ALOT of blue crayon in there. Much more than we could see at surface level, surprised everyone. It's a very GOOD thing we did this now! I immediately told DH, "you were right, I was wrong" which he loves of course.

So we go into recovery... Syd is flipping out and really wacky. 2 nurses are battling her. She has pulled out her IV (blood has splattered a few places). She wants every gadget off of her asap. But she's totally wobbly and crying/screaming.

She did great this afternoon. Too much energy actually, since we are supposed to keep her "less active". She'll have a slightly larger, but certainly less blue scar.

Moral of the story, Crayola soft crayons are better. Be wary of those hard cheap crayons, especially the ones from restaurants!

So glad the surgery went well! Sorry recovery wasn't as smooth!

I so often worry about the girls impaling themselves on something when they're running/walking/just standing there and trip and fall. They seemed to have inherited my lack of grace.

If you think Syd would tolerate having this on her skin, these are awesome to help prevent/reduce scar formation: Neosporin Scar Solution . They can be cut to an appropriate size.
