Surgery tomorrow for my little Will

My Will has to have surgery on his nose tomorrow to remove a benign cyst that has been there since birth. It's outpatient surgery, and I know everything should go pretty quickly and smoothly, but I am worried about my little guy regardless.

Has anyone else had their little one in stitches that have to be removed? What kind of boat am I in trying to keep a one-year old from pulling out stitches?

I've been there! My Macie had a pretty large skin tag (which the day of surgery the doctor said it was more of a growth than a skin tag) where her ear joined onto her face that had to be removed. She had it at birth and it grew. When she was 6 months, we had it removed. It was very nerve wrecking, of course, but it wasn't a huge deal. From the time we arrived that morning until the time we left it wasn't but 5 or 6 hours. I do know all about major surgeries though. I knew the 2nd half of my pregnancy that little Macie would be rushed to the Children's hospital directly after birth for a huge surgery. That time was much harder.

Good luck! :youcandoit: It will be over before you know it! Update us!

I have not had experience with stitches in one year olds. I just wanted to let you know that I am thinking of Will and hoping his surgery goes well, please keep us posted

I don't know about stitches, but I do know how worrying it can be when your little one has to have a procedure. My older son had tubes put in when he was three. It was the first time he had to be put under and I was really nervous. It all turned out so much better than I thought possible. I just wanted to let you know that I will be thinking of him.

Good luck. My Jack had a re-circumcision around 10 months. There were stitches, but they were the self-dissolving kind. He was under general anesthesia for about 45 minutes. He was really clingy when he came out of (my daughter was under for 5 minutes for ear tubes around 20 months and was a nightmare coming out of it - the older they are the worse it is apparently). He came home, ate lunch, then slept for 4.5 hours. After that, he never acted like it bothered him a bit. I would expect a quick bounce back from your son, and he may surprise you in not even being interested in the stitches.

I'm sorry your Will has to have surgery! Even if it's "minor" it's still hard not to worry.

Jack had hypospadias/chordee repair last fall, and I was a nervous wreck. It really helped to find distracting things to do during the surgery. Also, get a clear idea of how long they anticipate it to take, what the procedure is after surgery (how long he'll need to recover before you can see him, etc.), and who is allowed to go back into recovery with him. There was some confusion about this for us, and it made it unnecessarily stressful.

Jack's stitches were self-dissolving, and they were in his diaper (obviously!), so we didn't have to worry about him messing with them outside of diaper changes. If the surgeon is a pediatric surgeon, then he/she should have some recommendations about after care. I would question the doctor or the nurses before surgery so you know what to expect.

Good luck to him and you; hopefully it will be swift and smooth tomorrow!

I hope the surgery goes smoothly, and he gets some nice dissolving stitches too.

Thanks to all for the  sent our way. Will is doing pretty well this evening. We were in and out of the hospital in under 4 hours. His surgery went fine, and he only cried for about an hour after he woke up from the anesthesia. I think the IV hurt him more than anything. The minute it came out, he was a much happier camper :) Now comes the hard part of keeping him from pulling off the bandage, steri-strip and stitches....
