Our boys are 14 months and are getting into EVERYTHING. They can climb on all the chairs in the living room and dining room, and I either need to be in there with them telling them to SIT DOWN on the chairs, or I need to strap them into their highchairs so I can get stuff done in the kitchen.

I was thinking of getting a Superyard XT, but am not sure if it would work for long, since they're so active (and are pretty adept climbers!) I don't care about them pushing the play yard across the floor when in it, but I don't want them to be able to climb out.
Does anyone have any experience with this?
Is 14 months a bit old to be putting them in a play yard?

Any and all suggestions are welcome!

When I was a nanny for twins, they had 2-3 superyards put together in their playroom. The boys felt like they had more space and they used it from before walking till 2 yrs. Although these boys weren't climbers yet (other than out of their cribs). Maybe you could borrow one from someone before buying it.

Look for one second hand, craigslist or at a M2M sale before paying full price if your not sure it will work. Mine were climbers aswell and did get out of them but not until they were older then 14m. I have 3 of them now and I use them in the yard to make a fence.( we dont have a fenced in yard)

I still use mine. It's the best investment I had made in baby equipment because for $100 I have used it for over 3 years! I have my TV and entertainment centre inside of it and it keeps all the kids out. Works like a charm!

Mine can climb out of it! They use each other to get a boost and then one is out.

Mine are 14 months and have a long time till they could get out. Thank goodness, it is my LIFESAVER. (It's really two linked together) And my babies are both almost 30 lbs - so they are big!

Too old....definately No! Ours is still up, I should clarify though that we never used it as it shows on the box only when they were 10 months and starting to walk. As soon as they could walk it was opened up with an extension and went around the perimeter of our living room blocking our heat register under our front window, other toys and our one end table along with a regular gate on our stairs, vestibule and entry into our dinning room. Since Christmas ( we've also put our tree on the other side of the gate in '06 and '07) this year we halfed it and one part is around our one end table they like to climb on and the other part is still around our register under the window.

I guess I'm the naysayer -- I think 14 months is too old. That was about when we stopped using ours. And my girls aren't even climbers -- if yours are, it wouldn't be too long before they could climb right over the superyard.

However, you could still use it to block off certain things you don't want them to touch, like an entertainment center or something. With us, it was being enclosed that they hated.

You could also try the Configure Gate -- it's like a superyard, but taller, and has only vertical bars rather than a grid, so it's much harder to climb. However, it's a lot more expensive. I think it's designed to be used more like a barrier than a playyard -- to block off things like an open stairway or a fireplace.

Or, you could totally babyproof one area of the living room (and take all the chairs out) and use the superyard to keep them contained in that area.

I have to agree with Minette. I stopped using mine long before they were one but I did child proof the house heavily. I wanted to add a picture of their escape!

Thanks for the tips... I'm still not sure what to do! I've looked everywhere for one secondhand, and no one in this area has advertised one in the past month, so I think I'd have to pay full price.
I might just get one and hope for the best, and possibly reconfigure it as a gate/barrier if it doesn't work as an enclosure.
Besides removing all our furniture and sitting on cushions on the floor, I'm not sure how else to manage this stage!

P.S: Erykah.. I love the photo! What little scamps!

Ours are 16m old and we are still using them. and we LOVE them. check on craigslist in your area. you can put a wanted ad out for one or two.
we got two of them used and one new. worth the money in my eyes and i will resell them when we are finished with them.

    LOL. That is too cute!

My Superyard was one of my most important pieces of baby equipment. I used it all the time: to block off things in our house, to get up a barrier while outside, to section off the porch at my parent's or grandparent's house, to keep a dog away from the kids, at our hairdresser's, to cordon off their inflatable beds while traveling, etc. I got tons of use out of it and probably used it until closer to 3 years old. The girls could climb out of their pnps before they could climb out of the Superyard.

BTW, we did remove the coffee table during the toddler climbing stage because it was easier than constantly getting them off of it. I thought it would be a problem but it's actually nicer to have the space. We've never put it back. :)
