The boys are almost 18m and they are getting eatting alive in the middle of the day when playing outside. I have the sunscreen down but now I need something to stup the bugs from biting them.

I know this is going to sounds really stupid but can you put sunscreen on then bug rep. over it?

I dont think you can but I thought I would ask my stupid question of the day here...LOL

Is there a good childrens sunscreen that has a bug rep. in it?

and lastly..... the bits on the kids are HUGE .... I know when DH gets bit his are really big to so Im assuming the kids are taking after DH in the mosquito bite aspect but why the heck are they so bite and swallon looking?

    As always thanks in advance

I've done bug repellent and sunscreen . . . never really thought about it, as I do that on myself.

They do make products that have both, but I think the concern is that you are supposed to reapply sunscreen every few hours, but that you don't need that much insect repellent.

And no idea why the bites would be so big on your kids. Maybe that's just the way they are.

Some people just have more of a reaction to the bug bites than others, like an allergic reaction. Even with my ID girls, Natalie has a much worse reaction to mosquito bites than Rita does, and mine has gotten much worse in the past few years.

As far as products with both sunscreen + bug repellant, I have also read the same thing as PP about using two separate products instead of a combo one since you are supposed to reapply sunscreen frequently, but bug spray only like every 4-6 hours or something like that. And in my experience when I have used combo products, I have found that I don't like the results as much as when I've used two separate products that are each really good at what they do, KWIM?

I like the avon skin so soft line with sunscreen. It's gentle and does not have DEET. Dont buy the type with "dissappearing color" though, as my hands were blue for 2 days after applying it on my girls.

I found this on the CDC website so I guess it was not a stupid wuestion...LOL

    Q. Can I use an insect repellent and a product containing sunscreen at the same time? What are the recomendations for combination sunscreen/insect repellent products ?
    A. Yes. People can, and should, use both a sunscreen and an insect repellent when they are outdoors. Follow the instructions on the package for proper application of each product. In general, the recommendation is to apply sunscreen first, followed by repellent.

It is recommended NOT to use a single product that combines insect repellent containing DEET and sunscreen, because the instructions for use of insect repellents and use of sunscreen are different. In most situations, insect repellent does not need to be reapplied as frequently as sunscreen. While no recommendations are available at this time regarding products that combine other active ingredients and sunscreen, it is important to always follow the label on whatever product you are using.

To protect from sun exposure and insect bites, you can also wear long sleeves and long pants. You can also apply insect repellent to your clothing, rather than directly to your skin.

If you are concerned about to many chemicals there are some organic/natural options. I bought a bug be gone lotion for the twins from Spring Rain Botanicals. It said citronella could be harmful for infants. I'd rather be safe and able to reapply it anytime I feel they need it. I also bought Earth's Best organic sunscreen because of the more natural ingredients.

Hi. I sell Avon! You can buy off of my website and have the products shipped directly to you! If you spend $40 or more, use the code REP40 during check out for free shipping.

Skin So Soft makes the Bug Guard plus Sunscreen. It's on sale right now for $4.99 for 4 fl. oz. (regular $10). This stuff is awesome. I'm not just saying that because I'm trying to sell it. The Skin So Soft was what we used as kids for bug repellent (the regular bath oil is a bug repellent). The SPF is 30 and it's water resistant. It comes in a lotion (either regular or disappearing color), a pump or a spray.

If you're going to buy from Avon, please help out a fellow twin mom and buy from me! My website link is in my siggy.

California Baby sells a combination sunscreen and bug repellant that I was thinking of buying. It is sold online at www.californiababy.com. I have not tried it but have heard good things about the California Baby products.

I have extremely sweet blood - Skin So Soft does nothing for me. The mosquitos just laugh at it. :p
I am EXTREMELY allergic to some little critters here in the mountains. No idea what it is, but when I get bitten, it swells into a nasty mound. It looks like I have rocks under my skin. Benadryl and cold compresses ease the pain, but it takes at least 10 days for the welts to fade.
If your little ones are allergic to mosquito bites, then by all means use something stronger. There is bug repellant for kids made with a lower concentration of deet. And like PPs said, use sunscreen separately so that you can reapply without overloading on the repellant.

Definitely Avon's Skin so soft, with bug repellent plus sunscreen. I have used it on my guys since they were babies, I LOVE IT.

We have a sunscreen with bug repellent in our store that I love. It works well. I don't have any ideas on why the bites are so big but I did hear that putting a drop of liquid laundry detergent on a mosquito bite will help with the itching.
