Sunblock- what kind?

Today before our trip to the park, I applied NO AD brand spf 45 to my 3 kids. I was very careful to avoid eyes.

This was the first time I ever put any on the babies. Last year they were tiny and we avoided sun altogether. And this was our first day of really needing it.
Anyway I put it on and left to the park. About 15 mintues after getting there, DD (15 months) had a red, tearing eye and blotchy patch there. I wiped her face with a wet paper towel, hoping she was not having some sort of reaction. We stayed a little longer to let my 4 year old play, then headed home for lunch. By the time I had lunch ready, her eye was almost better and is better now. So now I am scared to use it anymore.

I think she *may* have been able to rub some into her eye whcih may have caused it, but don't know.

I have a playdate outside tomorrow and don't know what to use.

So what kind of sunblock besides this type, do you use that may be more gentle?

    TIA!

We use the Banana Boat lotion for babies. I just bought the aeresol continous spray stuff and I like that.

We have been putting sunscreen on the kids since they were tiny. Ben has VERY sensitive skin and gets rashes all the time from any and all things. He has the same reaction you described when he gets sunscreen anywhere near his eyes. So I no longer put it on his face. Now, he is the big dork at the playground in the wide brimmed hat!!!! ;) He is very used to wearing hats now though and is a great sport about it!

I had a reaction to NO AD similiar to that!!! My face got puffy & eyes watery.... I don't use it and use Banana Boat for myself and the kids (kids version) - no problems so far. I use aresol on arms/legs and lotion on their faces. One of my DD has very sensitive skin and she is Ok with it!

    HTH!

    Here's what most experts suggest:
"Zinc or titanium oxide sunscreens scatter UV light and yield fewer allergies, so they are better for children..."

I have seen that sunscreen will bother my girls' eyes, so we apply before getting dressed, so it has time to dry completely before they get sweaty in the car/at the park. That way we're also sure we get every spot so that when their clothes move while they play, they don't get burned.

We use Aveeno for Babies. It works great!

I have found that any lotion sunblock will make my boys' eyes tear up and burn, regardless of the brand or type, and also regardless of how carefully I apply. What has worked REALLY well on their faces has been the Sunbabies sunscreen stick. It stays where you put it, the consistency is perfect and they have never been able to rub it into their eyes.

    Thank you!
I just bought some Banana Boat aerosol. I think I am going to avoid putting it on her face if I can and use a hat. It says Tear-free on it though.

neutrogena also makes a brand for children that are allergic. My 1st dd would get a rash all over her body and her dermatologist recommended it. It worked great but wasn't waterproof.

I have heard this as well, zinc and titanium oxide are natural occuring minerals, I think this is why they have fewer allergies. I use the Earth's Best sunscreen for them, it only has those 2 sunscreen ingredients.

I did see that pink stick at Walmart. I think it's Coppertone Babies. After all of that, I did not need sunblock today due to rain!

But at least I know to avoid the face and have a new brand to try.

    Thanks!! :D

My pedi recommended Ombrelle and that's what we use.

I'm so glad you wrote this! I had my daughters outside twice this week (with sunblock) and twice my daughter developed the same symptoms. At first I though it was hay fever, but then I started to wonder about the sunblock. I'm going to buy some elastic to hold their hats on better now and avoid face sunscreen for her. Thanks for the post!

I get mine from avon specifically for kids...its sun AND bug repelant...it goes on blue and dries clear so you can see if you missed any areas...

    http://shop.avon.com/shop/product.asp?src_...&pf_id=7895

There is the link...its worth it! As a kid I was allergic to any lotions with Paba in them...alot of kids are...just check the label and see if its in the active ingredients.
