Our pedis have told us that sunblock is not FDA approved for infants under 6 months....how do you protect infants' skin...my twins are very fair and the weather is getting nice in NY and we love going out for walks but they are only 9 wks old....are hats and stroller shades enough????

    thanks

Wow! I didn't know that. I use the baby Aveeno sunblock and they were about 5 months when I used it the first time. Glad we just hit the 6 month mark. I would think sunburn would be worse than the small amount they would lick off their hands. Maybe don't use it on the hands, but everywhere else?

We have just been through summer here in NZ and it's been a good one! Hats and stroller shades worked for me apart from one time when I didn't think and used a baby carrier. I ended up having no choice but to put a baby in one to walk home in the midday sun. She had a hat on but legs and arms were exposed. I couldn't bear the thought of risking sunburn so I put sunscreen on her legs and arms (but not hands).

at our 4 month appointment our pedi told us to start using baby sunblock, regardless of the fact that it says for 6 months and up. i live in Miami Beach, so if we take the babies out for a walk, there's almost no way around them getting some type of sun. We don't take them out much, but usually once a weekend we'll go walk down ocean drive or lincoln road for some people watching, eating or just plane old fresh air.... we use "california baby" sunblock and like it a whole lot. the way i see it, one bad (sun burn) out weighs the other bad.... plus its not an everyday thing. i think of myself as a sorta hippie mom. i buy the more expensive bornfree bottles,... i only feed them (when its not breastmilk) organic soy formula... very careful about the toys they stick in their mouth and so on.... i feel very comfortable using the california baby line. that's also the diaper rash cream that we use, and it's been the ONLY cream thats ever taken a rash away.... and it did it within hours to boot. so that's my two cents... keep 'em out of the sun as much as you can, keep 'em in the shade, but if you have to go out into the sun, use california baby sunblock. :) good luck.

I have used it before 6 months on my kids, although at that age, I did try to keep them out of the sun for the most part.

When I asked my pedi last year about this at Liam's 4 month appt, he told me he would rather have me put the sunblock on than to have the baby get a sunburn.
