My twins are 3 months on Monday and 9 and 10 pounders. Is it safe to take them swimming? What about sunblock? Which one to use? Have you taken your babies in the sun? We are big river rats (ohio river) but i have not been on the boat or river all summer since they were so small. Should i wait till next year? It is VERY hot here! Humidity is finally going down before it was hard to breathe outside but i want them to love the outdoors and not be afraid of the water. I thought i could get them a little pool????

Hello! I was always told to not have infants under the age of 6 months to wear sunblock. Something wit the chemical make-up in it. But hey, I am not a ped. Anyways, I also thought about buying a small baby pool to splash around in since mine love baths! Just make sure the water is not to cold.

    Have fun,
    Jen

Yep, no sunblock till 6 months. If you have them out in the sun, they need to be fully covered and wear hats. It's best if you can rig some sort of shade for them (a little tent, or a sunshade on the stroller, or whatever). Or set the little pool under a tree. Even after 6 months, although they can wear sunblock, staying in the shade is safer.

I admit I would probably not take babies that age out on a boat. I'd just be too worried about something happening. If you have any doubts about it at all, don't be afraid to wait. They're not going to be scared of water just because you waited till they were a year old. If you have an indoor pool near you, you could also take them there during the winter, if you don't want to wait till next summer to get them in the water.

However, I admire you for even thinking of getting out and doing fun stuff at this point! When mine were 3 months old, I thought I'd never leave the house again except to take them for walks in the stroller.

I agree with her. I just wouldn't feel safe taking babies on a boat! At three months you can put them in the pool but just keep in mind that they can't wear sunscreen until they are 6 months old and that their core temperature will drop much more quickly than yours. I took my oldest to the pool when he was 6 months old and he had blue lips and was shivering cold in less than 15 minutes. And at the age of 3 months they won't really benefit much from a kiddie pool, maybe at 6 months they'd find it more fun.

I know that it's hard to wait for all the fun stuff, but it's more fun if you wait until they are old enough to enjoy it with you!

According to our ped no sunscreen until 6 months of age (as already said by pp) and no chlorinated pools until 6 months of age. Warm tap water is fine though. My twins are almost 6 months and I, too, have been wondering about taking them out in a boat. After thinking about the cost of buying two infant life jackets that they will have outgrown by next year, it doesn't seem worth it. I think we will be waiting for next summer.

thanks gals... no we were not taking them on the boat (we have a ski boat). We just are use to being on the river and i want to have them in water too. I figured it was not time yet so we will visit and indoor pool this winter and wait till next year...
I am eager ot do all kinds of things... i guess we will go to the zoo. LOL...

It is my understanding that the American Academy of Pediatrics is no longer saying 6 months for sunscreen, but that it can be used earlier. I know our pedi gave the okay for sunscreen at 3 months, and we began using it then. Of course, we still used common sense and dressed them appropriately and did not expose them to the sun for extended periods of time.

Our pedi ok'd sunscreen at our 4 month check up. And that is about the time we took them out on our boat too, LOL! We have a cuddy were they can take a little snooze & get out of the sun. They do awesome on the boat. Just make sure they wear their life jackets & all should be fine. They actually enjoy the lull of the motors & go right to sleep!

We actually had our last ds out on the boat weeks after he was born. He was an end of May baby & he was out in June sometime. He obviously didn't go out in the water, but he still enjoyed the rocking.

Our pedi said sunblock is okay as long as we test it on their skin first and it has an spf of at least 50.. We use Aveeno and the babies do well with it. We tried coppertone, but I didn't like the strong smell.

We have a little pool in our backyard but it is a pain to keep up with it. It isn't a little kiddie pool you can just dump out and refill. We got one big enough for DH and I to fit in. Plus he has to be home to take them in the water.

We have taken them to the pool in our community and a man-made beach on a local army base and I bought a small tent for them. They don't like it and want to be held so we sit in the shade when we aren't in the pool. I don't know if I would take them out on a boat yet though since the water reflects the sun so much and the boat is usually an all day thing. If there is shade though, it might be okay.

Is it safe to take them swimming? Yes, I took mine when they were relatively young.

What about sunblock? Our pedi approved Avon's skin so soft, when they were 4 months old.

Have you taken your babies in the sun? I did, but I always put them in protective clothing, as well as the SSS sunscreen/bug repellent.

    Hope that helps!
