I live in California and we will be traveling back east to Massachusetts to spend the holidays with DH's family. Last year they were 6 months and basically immobile. This year, they'll be 18-months and they walking and moving! Since we are only going for a week, I don't want to invest a lot of money in clothing. I am going to be able to borrow a few sweater for DD but have nothing for DS. Can you please let me know what shoes or boots you'd recommend, in addition to jackets and sweaters? Last year I bought them these puffy jackets and they didn't need them! I expect we'll be out a lot in the snow or cold and on daytrips now that they walk.

I live in PA, so I am not sure how much help I can be for Massachusetts winters. I would recommend sweaters, sweatshirts, jogging pants, jeans. My DD wears a puffy jacket during the winter and my DS wears the jacket that came with his snowsuit. As for boots, I would think any boots that keep out rain or snow should do. Good luck and enjoy your trip.
PS: Does DH's family back home or their friends have clothes you can borrow?

My kids typically wear their snow jackets or if it's a little milder they wear fleece jackets (over sweaters). We have snow boots, work boots and rain boots. And if there is no snow on the ground they wear sneakers. Where in MA are you going to be? It's possible that I would have clothes to fit your little ones that you could borrow.

This is interesting, I was thinking of taking my boys to see my sister in California in December! haaha! I live in NH. We do the same as Maureen. Sweatshirts, fleece or puffy coats if it's real cold. Sneakers if no snow. Layers are important. (ie: tshirt, turtle neck, sweatshirt, vest. Hats are a good idea aswell.

Bring everything you own. Last weekend it was 30 degrees, yesterday it was 70 :) I would definitely bring boots and snow pants (or some kind of wind pants that could fit over a couple pairs of sweats), but you could prbably get away with a fleece jacket with several sweaters underneath rather than a fat winter jacket. And hats and mittens.
