suggestions for good books to read to babies.

I would like to start reading to my girls more often. They are 8 months. Does anyone have any suggestions for good books that your babies have enjoyed? It seems that everytime I have tried reading to them they are pretty disinterested unless its pages they can turn. Any ideas?

My little ones seem to enjoy poem books. They get so tickled by my goofy face and voice. Coming from a second grade teacher, the best thing you can do is read to your children . . . read ANYTHING!

 

My faves are:

The Very Hungry Caterpillar; The Runaway Bunny; Goodnight Moon; Guess how Much I Love You; Barnyard Dance; Moo Baa La La La...

All of these are available in board books which is great b/c my girls like to grab the books with their grubby little fingers as I am reading to them!!!

 

Any books are good really! It really helps them learn words and be entertained! I love Sandra BOyton books. They rhyme! "But not the hippopotimus, the goodnight book.. there are so many!

 

I read them cloth books with the soft pages with things they can touch and feel. They really like those.

 

My favorite kinds are the ones with fuzzy animals and objects to pat and feel. I have several of those that the babies enjoy, plus the good old-fashioned one "Pat the Bunny". The babies love to feel the different textures in each book. It's SO much fun!

Any board books would be great, bright colors and simple rhymes tend to go over well with little ones. Oh, they also seem to like books with real pictures of babies. Explain that one to me!

 

so far anything with big, glossy, colorful pictures! the bigger the book... the easier it is for both boys to see it! i sit between them

 

As previous post said, all books are good. Before coming a stay at home mom, I was a first grade teacher for 3 years and a kindergarten teacher for four years. So, I have quite a collection of books now for the girls. My personal favorites and the ones that I have found keep their attention are the ones that don't have too many words and great, colorful pictures. I highly recommend all of the David Shannon books. Especially the No David series. They are big pictures, colorful and very very funny. Also, I have found that the girls love the Olivia books, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, MoonBear books, Dr. Seuss books, Coco Can't Wait, Good Night Moon...God, I could go on and on there are just so many!!!

As pp said, anything you read to them is good. They don't really have to be paying attention to be taking it in. Just hearing the story book language and sounds of your voice (as opposed to just normal conversation lanuguage) is what's important at this stage. If there is a great book with great pictures but is too wordy, you don't have to read the words, you can either put it into 1 or 2 simple sentences or make up the words to what you see in the picture (which is one way we start our kinder kids reading).

 

My kids favorite it book is "mr brown can moo can you?" I have read so many books to them, but this one always gets their attention. My friends son was here during storytime, he is the same age and his parents were amazed at how much he enjoyed it as well. They ended up going out and buying it. So this one gets my top vote. I have a mini version and also a giant version.

As for other suggestions, pretty much the same ones the other PPs have mentioned. Today I went to the library and picked up a bunch of board books with bright big photos. Last week, my ped suggested books with less than three words per page so you can turn fast and keep their attention. I have to say it worked!

I love her books as well. Other favorites of my son are Brown Bear, Brown Bear What do you see. Mr. Brown can moo can you. Also, my son loves the books you can touch and feel. Like other posts said any book you read to your children is great. I know that rhyming books are really important to read to your children. HTH!

 

My kids did not enjoy stories until just recently. Before that, we enjoyed board books with real life photographs. Roger Priddy (Priddy Books) makes a wonderful assortment of board books that are reasonably priced and full of bright, vivid pictures. We own quite an assortment of these!!!! You can usually get them for a good price on Amazon, and get free shipping with $25 or more.

This is one of our favorites and there is another one that is for animals. They are big and fun for two to look at together!!!

 

Ditto for the Sandra Boynton books, we love Snuggle Puppy and Belly Button Book. We also got the girls CDs for Christmas with the music and other fun songs she wrote, very cute, Tracy

 

Our girls love big, colourful books at this age. Their favourite right now is the Old Macdonald Had a Farm finger puppet book. I sometimes sing it and other times I read it.

 

A couple of our favorites are... the Olivia series by Ian Falconer, the Napping House by Audrey Wood, I Love You Through And Through by Bernadette Rossetti-Shustak, any Magic Ribbon books, Tumble Bumble by Felicia Bond, any book with bright, colorful, tactile pages. HTH

 

My kids also love the books with different textures - but the go absolutely nuts over the Spot the Dog books. They get so worked up when I bring them out. They colors are bright and the pictures are nice and big.

 

Goodnight Moon was our favorite!

I love the Brown bear brown bear book by Eric CarLe and Bill Martin Jr. There is also a song with the same name done by Raffi I think. The girls get a big kick when I sign the song to them. There is a collection of books called Sheep in a .. jeep, shop etc and they rhyme. As a reading specialist and a special ed teacher rhyming is important to further reading skills. HTH

Hi,

I read my son cole "Bear Snores On" every night. It's a great book and one that rhymes so I have nearly memorized it.. if he's especially tired and falling asleep while nursing, I'll just recite the book to him to keep with our ritual.

I love "Is your Mamma a Llama?" - great rhyming book and they guys absolutely love the DK Touch and Feel Books - they have a variety: Jungle Animals, Household, Baseball, Fire Engine, Pets...

Also when they are a little older anything by Robert Munsch - esp. Stephanie's Ponytail and Paperbag Princess

I could go on and on but those are the big ones that we read a lot of.

 

My husband works for a book company, so the girls get new books almost every week They love all books, and I think it has more to do with how you read to them, then what you read to them...but my personal favorite is Dr. Seus b/c they are so much fun to read LOL.
