Suggestions for Glucose Test

Hi Everyone,
I am nearly 20 weeks pregnant with di/di boys, and so far have been lucky enough to have had a relatively uncomplicated pregnancy.

However I have been referred to have a glucose tolerance test, and am having a problem in that I seem to be unable to keep the glucose drink down. The first time I managed to last for about half an hour, but today I only lasted for 10 minutes before having to rush to the bathroom. Of course vomiting negates the test, so I have to go back again next week to try again. <_<
Can anyone suggest ways to keep the stuff down? Should I drink lots of water before hand? Or sip water between sips of glucose drink?
Thanks,
Caitlin

I'd ask them for a different flavor, drink a cup of water before, and sip on water throughout.

:good: THAT sounds like a perfect plan of action. Good luck!!

Do you HAVE to do it? I had gastric bypass, so I can't drink that stuff ... I think because of the amount of sugar or something. Anyway, what I have to do in lieu of that is pretty simple.

I have to fast, then go give blood. Then I leave, go eat breakfast. Exactly two hours after I finish eating, I go back and do a second blood draw. That's it.

Maybe if you really can't keep it down, they can do that instead.

Hi, no real advice here, just maybe as pp suggested a different flavour? I know when i did it, they didn't want me to drink any water at all (or very very little) in between taking the drink and the blood test. But i would imagine the medical staff would have encountered this situation before and have a plan B?

I have heard that you can take the test using jellybeans. You eat a certain number of jellybeans instead of drinking the solution and then they test like normal. Maybe that would work for you.

At least for me, I didn't need to fast before the 1 hour test so perhaps you should eat a breakfast with some protein in it? That may help as well.

I just had the test.... I have a cold/plague for over 4 weeks now. I'm eating cough drops like candy to try not to cough/choke.. so, I ate 3 eggs with milk for breakfast and they wouldn't let me take anything after I drank the drink. I drank a bottle of water before the drink. Tried to relax (took my ipod) so I wouldn't cough or need anything after that drink. It hit about 1/2 way into the hour... thought that I'd throw up. I was determined to pass this test!!! I did the mind over matter really hard. I just told myself to breathe and relax & it's for the babies.... I put my mind somewhere else (it helped listening to my Christmas music!!! ) but... I did it. I felt like crap for the rest of the day... Good Luck!!!!!

Oh! I PASSED it also!!!!!!

I jsut had mine last week, which they postponed because I'd been so sick with morning sickness. I just pinched my nose, drank it down, and chomped on ice.

But from what I'm reading there seems to be alternatives, just keep telling them you need to find one. Good Luck! ;)
