Everytime I go to pick my kids up from their grandmother's, she always has them with a sippy cup of water. I thought that was fine until she told me she puts a 'pinch' of sugar in it for the flavor. Is this okay or not because I'm kind of iffy about it?

Hmmm, I wouldn't be comfortable with it, but I don't know if it is "bad." I guess you can ask her if she did it with you/your DH when you were kids. I know that they changed alot of things from when we were kids, but we turned out okay. DH and I were fed formula in the 70s because it was better than BM!

I know my mom gave bottles of sugar water to my brother and sister when they were tiny because it was recommended by our pedi. I wouldn't dream of doing that now though! They don't need their bellies full of empty calories. I'd talk to your grandmother about it. Your kids will probably like sippies of plain water just as much.

I would say "No." They dont need sugar at all.

isnt that what they give infant boys when theyre circumsised? i think the NICU nurse told me it kinda hangs them out, but thats probably just for infants? we're practicing with sippy cups but they dont drink from them yet. i usually put a teeny bit of juice and then water though

Sugar water (from what my Mom told me) is nature's painkiller in babies. It is also good for their tummies apparently. My pedi actually recommended it for constipation.
Old wives tales to me but who knows.
I'm with the pp. They used to give it to us as babies and we turned out ok. LOL
I mean it IS just a pinch.

Using it medicinally is one thing (whether it's good or bad is another topic!), but it sounds like your mom is doing it just to make it taste sweet.

That would really upset me if I were in that situation. I don't want my kids developing a taste for processed sugar before I can help it. Liking sweet healthy foods like fruit or breastmilk is one thing, adding processed, unnecessary sugar with empty calories is another. I would be worried that it could affect their taste for water, so they start disliking water unless it's sweetened. I think it's setting up bad habits, personally.

I personally would not like it. If she is doing it for "flavor" I would ask her to use a little fruit juice instead of sugar. Like maybe 1/8 apple juice, the rest water.

I would want my kids to like just plain water. My mom does not understand why I am so against juice.

Honestly, a pinch wouldn't bother me. A teaspoon or more, yes that would bother me :)

I agree with a splash of juice tho, I mean, even I don't enjoy plain water all that much I prefer some flavoring :)

My kids love plain water, and I want to keep it that way. I wouldn't put any sugar in the water.

I would be upset that she was giving something like that without asking you first.
