Sugar/salt-free, non-rice rusks

    Hi ladies,

    I am on the hunt for baby rusks of the non-rice variety that do not contain added salt or sugar. So far no luck! I was able to find one brand online (Holle Spelt Rusks - there is some salt but not much) but they have to be ordered from overseas and once you factor in shipping costs it just isn't worth it. Ideally it will be a brand that I can find or order online in Canada. I am also open to making my own so if you have a good recipe I would love to hear it!

    You should probably tell us uneducated Americans what "Rusk" is. I'm clueless. :)

    ahhhh biter biscuits/teething biscuits.

    Some recipes

    Edit again: You can leave out the salt, it's not like you're using it to make the biscuit rise.

    3/4 cup oats (I have instant oatmeal in the house)
    3/4 cup oat flour (Put your oats in a blender and beat the tar out of them)
    1/2 mashed banana
    pinch of salt
    dribble by dribble of water

    Mix it together without the water and then add a dribble at a time. You're going for nearly-dried out playdough texture. I rolled them into pinky finger sized rusks and popped them in the oven for about 45 minutes at 180 degrees (350).

    Use canola or sunflower or grapeseed oil (olive oil is even better, but it can be strongly flavoured), not corn oil, in the recipes that call for oil.

    Thanks for the recipe Bex! I look forward to trying it out. I will have to substitute another fruit for the banana tho as my LOs need to avoid banana b/c of constipation (hence my search for rice-free rusks)!

    Thanks for the tip Lisa! I tend to use only canola or safflower oil when baking anyway. I have also used olive oil too but only extra virgin as it is much lighter tasting.
