It's hard to say. It could be teething. At 12 months both of my kids were getting their one year molars and they did this. Sometimes I would hold them for a bit and put them back down, but they would usually still scream. After 5-10 minutes they would go back to sleep. They rarely woke the other when this happened.

Unfortunately, kids sometimes just wake up. :pardon: Sometimes it's teething, or it could be something different about their environment. Is it hotter, colder, a different noise? Is it at the same time every night? Maybe your AC is going off and waking them up.

After you've eliminated external issues, I'd look at their napping. You said that you are moving toward 1 nap. Any major life-changes like these can lead to night wakings. So can new milestones, like walking, talking, etc. Anything other changes in their lives right now?

You may have to go back to your sleep plan to get them STTN. I know that we've had strange rashes of night-wakings for various reasons. We go back to our plan and almost always they go back to STTN within a few days.

I know, you think once you have them STTN you're in the clear. It really sucks when they start waking back up!! Hopefully they'll get over whatever is bugging them soon.

i would lean towards Valerie's theory about the change in naps. it's also possible that if they aren't quite ready for the transition to one nap that they've reached an overtired state - overtired babies have a harder time falling asleep & staying asleep than babies who get the sleep they need. i hate the why-aren't-they-STTN-now? game.
