I would love to give the babies gerber puffs to practice feeding themselves with, but they don't sell puffs in the country I live in. Any other suggestions as to other things I could give. We have done small rice crackers, and those seem to work ok as long as we watch them closely. Any other idea for foods to give them? I have also tried some fruits, like avocado and banana but they are sticky and slimy and hard for the babies to actually pick up.

    Is puffed rice cereal available?

We had this great thing it is a net with a ring handle you can put the food into the net part and close the handle part and they can chew on anything with a bit less mess. The best thing is you can put anything in it without them choking because they mash the food in the net with their gums or teeth. We got ours at a department store for about $6 but used them heaps!

Cheerios. If you are nervous about them choking you could wet them a little, but I have never had a problem with them. Good luck!

Try Cheerios. I agree with crackers. Those are a great choice! :good:

Cheerios! I never really did puffs because I thought they were HUGE and the girls loved cheerios. I broke them in a half at first and made them mushy in a little formula.

Definitely Cheerios!!!! The boys loved them!!! Puffed rice cereal would work also. The nets to put food in were great- we used those as well. I think I got them at Babies r Us or from One Step Ahead (they are online). Happy eating!!!!

If there is a large population of Indian or Pakistani guest workers in Abu Dabhi you should be able to find some Indian puffed grain snacks at the grocery store. My girls love these - it's puffed rice and other puffed things (not sure exactly what all it is) with spices on them. Very easy for little babies to eat; I actually found the Indian snacks easier as a first solid crunchy food than puffs.

Cheerios are a favorite around here too. You can also crush up the cheerios and use that to coat the banana/slippery food to make it easier to grab. I've not tried it but read it several places.

If you still want to try slimy/slippery food like avocado, you could roll it in crushed up cherrios or rice krispies to give them a little more grip.

My guy loves : rice cakes, toast, any crunchy cracker, pretzel rods (no salt), cheerios. Be brave, they can handle more than you think! You can break small pieces or try letting them just chew and suck on the bigger stuff. Great for while you are eating dinner and they want to sit with you.

Ditto on the Cheerios. We don't even bother with puffs.

Cherrios Cherrios & more Cherrios! Puffs are way too expensive! Cherrios disolve pretty fast once they are in their mouths so I wouldn't worry about choking... None of my kids ever had trouble w/ them.
