For the second time in a few months, Lauren is having a problem finding words. It's like she is a broken record with one word, but doesn't say it completely, and then she tries to complete her thought and it comes out garbled. She has been talking clearly for a while now, so it alarms me that this comes on pretty suddenly. I am trying to think of the last time it happened. I can't remember how long it lasted, but now that I think back, it seems she suddenly started using different, more complex, sentences once it got "better".

So I'm wondering if any of you have experienced a correlation between stuttering and a language explosion.

Not sure about the lanuguage explosion part, but Annie had two episodes of stuttering, one at 2 1/2 and the other at 3 1/2. Both times she grew out of it with no intervention. I was going to have someone come out to evaluate her the second time, but by the time they were able to schedule her she was fine.

Leah stuttered for a bit maybe around the age of 3. I read that it is very common for young children to stutter as they are just trying to get the "right" word. What I read said to not correct it or even try and help them pronounce. So, I ignored it for a bit and it did go away. However, if it had continued I would have brought it to Ped's attention. Maybe a call to the EI chic can ease your mind.

Chelley~ Not sure about the correlation between the language explosion and stuttering but I posted something similar to this a couple of months ago. Mattie has had a couple of episodes and I know that Josh stutters so it is a concern here. Some other people said that it is common at this age I think. It is like their brains are working faster than their mouths can move.

That is exactly what it seems like. You can see her trying to go a mile a minute, but her mouth is not cooperating.

Gabriel stumbles all over his words a lot. I never really thought of it as stuttering, though. If he only has one or two words to say, they are fine. A sentence gets garbled and it's like he is picking up one syllable from each word. Does that make sense? He does this a lot though and I've never related it to a language explosion. But I do know that he is talking better and better every day and it seems every day he has more bigger words and the "stuttering/garbling" is getting much better.

I would ask the EI lady if you are worried. ((hugs))

I have heard that as well. I think their little minds are moving faster than the words come out. I have a friend whose DD did this for awhile too and it stopped.

Chelley, I think it is most likely a case of her brain functioning faster than her mouth can get the words out. I have seen most of my kids go through that at one point or another and, you're right, in a couple of weeks she will probably be using much more complex sentences as her ability to speak catches up with her brain. Try not to worry, she will work it out.

Michelle, I would have to agree. I remember one of the older ones doing the same, and sometimes Rachel does it as well. I seriously think it's nothing to worry about at this time. I think it's their minds are working faster than they can actually say.'s to you and Lauren.

I've heard the same as the others. :good:  I know Tony "stutters" but I never thought it was stuttering. Opps. He also will repeat the prior word a few times before he can get the next word out. I definately think it's the mind moving faster then the mouth.

Not at that age, but I think it's pretty normal. I've read that it's especially common around age 3, but it might happen earlier for children who are early talkers. Amy is definitely doing it now -- it's like she has so many words now, and tries to say so much, her brain gets ahead of her mouth.

Both Izzy and Will went through a little stuttering phase. I do think it's like other's said already, their brains go faster than their mouths can form the word. I wouldn't worry (yep, easier said than done, though).
