Just a few minutes ago I walked down the hall where I work and I was talking to this lady about the girls trying squash last night and how much they liked it. This lady has a neice that is a day younger than my girls and she said that she loves sweet potatoes... well this other lady that was in the office said well just be careful and don't feed them to much orange colored food(sweet potatoes, carrots) because they will turn orange. I said oh their poop... and she said no they will turn orange. Has anybody ever heard of this before? I have never. I told her if that was the case the my oldest dd should be green because she lived on green beans forever.

Yes, I heard this from my MIL too. She said DH loved orange foods so much (all he'd eat) that he turned orange!!

I had heard this from a friend as well, also in relation to sweet potato.

It's the beta carotene in them (precursor to vitamin A) :) It's actually called carotenemia and is a temporary harmless color change, just looks a little silly. Goes away if you decrease the amount of orange/yellow veggies.

Thanks for all the posts.. I just did some research and discovered the beta carotene causes this.

This can happen with orange food, but I think they'd have to eat a LOT of it. Plus, it isn't really dangerous -- it just looks weird.

Yes! When DS (now 6) was a baby I took him to the pediatrician for a check up and as soon as he walked in and looked at DS he said "go easy on the orange foods." I guess I looked confused and he held up his little foot to show me the bottom side did have an orange tinge to it  DS was always a chubby baby so we started calling him our little pumpkin from then on ;)

When my boys went for their 6 month check up, my ped mentioned that the boys must like their orange foods. I said yes, why? The tips of their noses were slightly orange and once I looked I noticed it too. I guess I didn't generally notice it because it wasn't a strong color and my ped said that it was okay, and in fact good that they liked their orange foods. Just not to let them get any "more" orange!

This happened to both my girls. When they were first getting into the veggie baby foods, they deffinately had a preference for the orange veggies versus the green ones. Everyday almost I was feeding them some sort of orange veggie and sure enough they had a slight orange tinge to their skin color.

Our boys went through a phase of having 'carrot noses'. What can I say, my boys love their orange veggies! :D

Elliot definitely had an orange tint as a baby, mostly on his nose. I kept trying to wash it off until we figured out it was because he ate mostly carrots, sweet potato, and squash. No harm done.

Annis had an orange tint to her for awhile as a baby. Ellie had the orange nose going for her. It wasn't too bad to see in person, but it pictures it was REALLY obvious!!!

We had an exchange student when I was in high school, and all she ate was carrots. Seriously. She was very very orange. And she smoked weed on our front steps like that was normal and stole my underwear....but that's another story.

They look like the have a nice little orange glow tan. Years ago I had no clue and my daughters loved carrots. I thought they were jaundiced. The doctor explained what had happened.

Totally true! My oldest LOVED sweet potatoes and carrots so much I fed him at least 1 jar of those a day. His nose and cheeks eventually turned orange! I thought it was because his skin was stained, but I guess (from what the pedi told me) the orange color was in the pigment of his skin! She told me to cut down to 2 jars a week of orange food until his normal color returned. It took a month at least and lots of sunlight.
