Strange clothing sizes

Collin and Dillan are both pretty decent sized kids. They both are around the 25lb mark at nearly 2 years-old. I'm having the hardest problem buying them winter clothes though. I had to move them to 2T tops because the 24month tops were getting too short (some showing belly). BUT they are still in 18months bottoms!! It just seems really strange to me to buy 2T shirts and 18month bottoms. Another problem I have having is that some 18month pants are too short, but 24 month pants are too long and too big in the waist! I've been finding the cutest outfits, but most of them I like come in a pair so you can't choose different sized tops than bottoms. Anyone else have children who wear two completly different sizes for tops and bottoms?

yes we do. My ds is true to size for 2T but his waist is tiny so I have to take a lot of stuff in. Dd is teeny . This summer she is in 12 month shorts and I have to take in the waist  But her tops are 18 months. She's starting to go into 18 month pants but I'll have to take in the waist.

All my kids were and are like that. The boys right now need 4T-5T shirts and could wear 24 month pants for their waist but need 3T for the lenght, talk about hard to find pants that fit! I have to search out adjustable waist clothes for toddlers since the are 30 pounds and 39 inches tall.

Yes, for the longest time I've been buying them different sizes for shirts/pants. I was so glad for Summer to come because they could wear 12-18M shorts and they weren't falling off. During their recent growth spurts, their legs have really lengthened so I'm hoping that 2T pants will fit for Fall.

It kills me that they used to sell 1T (replaced by 18M). Also, if they potty train soon, NOTHING will fit for bottoms because they won't have their bulky cloth diapers to hold the pants up. They also used to make children's size 2 (like 2T but for potty trained kids). Very, very few companies make 1T or 2 anymore because babies have gotten bigger overall. I did make them some 1T things last Winter and they fit so much better than the 18M stuff but I don't really want to have to make all of their pants this Fall.

This issue is going to be the death of me! I just went shopping yesterday and bought all 2T tops which I know will be fine. I bought them 18-24 bottoms thinking they wouldn't fit in 2T. They look a tiny bit too big, but won't make it until March in that size. So I guess we'll have to cuff until then! I was just talking to my gf about this. I think we should start a custom clothing line!

DD is in 12 month tops and 6 mo bottoms - her skinny little butt just can't even hold up 9 mo pants....but she's nearly 31 in tall - I don't know what I'm going to do for the winter!

I completely understand your frustration. My girls are 22lbs and 33 inches. I have started buyung 24 month tops because the 18 month are too short and their bellies stick out, but most 12 month bottoms are still too big in the waist. I don't know what we are going to do when it gets cold. If I buy the size to fit their length, they won't be able to keep them on and if I buy to fit their waists, they will look like shorts. Everything is going to look like capris or I am going to have to have the waists of their pants taken in. I definitely don't buy sets anymore. We have to buy everything separate. Luckily, the girls are the same size, so at least I don't have to figure out who can wear what every day!

I think for most average to lean sized children (50% or less), the standard that I have found is kids wear one size smaller pants than shirt size. Not sure why it's that way but it is. I never buy pair outfits, so its no big deal for us.

It gets much easier to dress them as they get older. I buy almost all their clothes at "Old Navy" and some "Gap". In both stores after size 2T (i believe), they have "cinch waist" pants vs. elastic waistband. This is a must with my tall, lean son. I now buy him a size 3T pants and cinch it to the last button...however, it just makes it with length for pants. They will soon be "floods" and I guess that I'll have to move up a size. In shorts, since length is not an issue, he still wears 2T....and he's 3.5yrs.

That's my girl! She is super tall but only like 21 lbs. So she's a little tiny thing, but she's so tall she's outgrowing some 18 month things, while she can still wear some 12 month shorts and skirts.

Yes, my girls are in 18-24m tops and 12-18m bottoms right now. They must have very short legs -- the waists on the 18-24m pants fit fine, but they're always too long (the opposite problem from what most of you are saying). They can even wear 12m pants (at 21 months!) if they're stretchy.

I never go by the size marked on the label -- I just hold everything up and look at it. If I'm feeling very organized, when I go shopping I bring a shirt and a pair of pants that currently fit them, so I have something to compare to. If I don't do that, I always get things that are too big.

And I never buy two-piece outfits (though I do buy one-piece -- they seem to be a little more flexible in terms of size -- although I guess now that we are PT I'll have to stop this).

We have the same problem with the girls - long and skinny. Old Navy and Wal-mart both carry toddler pants that have the adjustable waist - the same kind you find in maternity clothing. (Please Mum in Canada does too). These are pretty much the only kinds of pants I bother to buy now (unless they have an elastic waist) since it's a lot easier than hemming.

For one of our outfits Jessy had to have 9month pants and 12 month shirt(carters run large)! Right now in most clothes Jessy wears a 18 top and bottom and Jazzy wears 2T
