When you stopped reflux meds, did you wean them away or just stop cold turkey? The girls got up late this morning and I actually forgot to give them. DH has been pushing to try to quit the meds and I wonder if we should just try it. So they haven't had them today and so far things are o.k. Does it take a while for it to get out of their system or will we notice a change (if there is one) right away?

Beth, I went cold turkey weaning my son off the meds. My doctor said I could do it either way, so I did what I thought would be the easier method. From what my sons specialist said, they can start showing signs of the reflux returning up to six weeks after stopping meds. Luckily he didn't.

I'm wishing you guys lots of luck!! Keep us updated on the progress! :)

We went cold turkey a few times we "forgot" the med & decided to just stop it, but within a few days, we were always back on it. When we finally did get off of it, we did wean, but a quick wean (within a few days). I didn't know about the 6 wk thing....wow! Mine have been off meds for about 5 mos & still show signs of reflux, but just don't seem as bothered by it anymore.

We went cold turkey as well, our pedi said it would be fine. The twins did just fine.

My Dr. said to drop the evening dose since we only fed them the one time after that dose and the STTN. He said if that went well wait a little and then drop the AM dose.

Oh! Good question. I know we are no where near dropping the meds, but how do you know when to drop them? Is there an age when they shouldn't need it any longer?

(I hope I am not hijacking your thread Beth)

Emma went off at 9 months, cold turkey. Jake had the worst reflux of the two, and I weaned him off of them at 14 months. I didn't really notice a difference either way.

I don't know what meds your kiddos are taking, but my older DD was on prilosec. We did a "cold turkey" wean probably 4-5 different times between the ages of 6 months and 3 years. Prilosec is a drug that stays in your system a little bit, so we had to give it a full four days or so with no medicine to notice if it had any effect. Unfortunately for us, most of those times she wasn't ready to be off the meds and then it took another 4 days for the meds to get back into her system fully. Finally by 3 years we were successful at dropping the meds. GOOD LUCK!
